i'll take a stab at it....
we always talk about how TN recruits nationally cause they have to. Knowing that going in, it's not like we are going in to HS's all over the state and recruiting 2-3 people out of each...so it is very likely that there is a farily significant % of players that play football at TN that know no one when they get here, other than the people that have been hosting or recruiting them. it puts a premium on the coaches creating that atmosphere and developing relationships between teammates. and it doesn't hurt that in most cases, the person doing the hosting was in the same shoes as the new recruit 3-4 years prior...so there's been a precedent set that the kid can see and buy in to, w/out necessarily thinking there's anything to it.
So when a guy that is in the program that is from NJ or OK or CA etc...comes to another kid from another part of the country and talks about "tennessee family", it's a little easier to buy it than if it were the opposite. there are likely no "cliques" already formed when some of these players get to knoxville, and many of them are forced into a social and cultural situation that is perceived to be a lot different than what they were used to, depending on what part of the country they were from.
So given the history that TN has from a national recruiting standpoint, i think it makes a kid from CA or OR or wherever not so intimidated about coming in to a school that may be so far from home.
How's that OWB????
