My fanatical Nascar friend thought this would be a good idea. I tend to agree. However he id think Little E would almost automatically always be voted in every time. Thoughts?

Well if you could justify letting fickle fans picking a driver being equal to winning your way in over 26 races to the other 12 drivers, and get their approval, I would say fine.

If you can do this, I would like to hire you as a salesman.

The only reason this could come to be would be because NASCAR wants Junior in the Chase.

No. If its a fan vote, Jr. would get in every time. Lord knows he wouldn't earn his way in by running well.

This is dumber than the last thing you posted in this forum.

How about Jimmy Spencer? He could bring some excitement to the chase.......or at least punch 1 or 2 of the chasers.

It's the only way Earnhardt makes the chase every year.

Here are the nominees by their nominators.

Richard Childress - Dave Marcus, "I can get a caution when we need one."

Rick Hendrick - Ken Schrader, "Even he is better than what I got left."

Jack Roush - Jamie McMurray, "Maybe he'll come back if I do this."

Joe Gibbs - Dale Jarret, "He can block for my guys by being a rolling chicane."

Richard Petty - David Pearson, "I shore ain't gonna nominate that back talking punk AJ, besides Pearson is better than whats we got."

Chip Gannassi - Danica Patrick, "Why spoil my record of bringing in open wheelers that suck in NASCAR?"

Robby Gordon - No One, "I'm going to the Dakar Rally where I have a chance."

I've sometimes wondered how a wildcard could be implemented...

Maybe take the driver who has the most top 5s/10s of non-Chase drivers, or the driver outside of the top-12 with the most wins or something.

It started with ten and then two more were added to try to get Junior in. Why does there have to be one more? I would drop it back to ten.

Or scrap the damn thing.

I could not agree more. I don't think many outside the hardcore fans really care more now that the Chase format has been instituted. I've always thought it was detrimental; especially to those whose favorite driver doesn't make it in so they just sort of check out for the last 10 races.

NASCAR and the PGA Tour are trying to figure out how to be the NFL and the sports with their long schedules just don't lend themselves to that.

The powers that be don't seem to recognize that the more they've made "improvements" over the past 6 or 7 years, the lower TV ratings and attendance have gotten.

It was expanded to 12 following the 2006 season, a year in which Jr. actually made the Chase and finished in the top five in the final standings. Stewart was the big name that missed it in '06.

Or scrap the damn thing.

Having fans involved in the decision of who gets in the chase speaks to everything nascar has stood for. Jr has underwhelmed, but if he's the fan favorite even if he has little chance of winning is good business and shows up in sales.

There you go muddying up things with facts.

I think the Chase would be ok with a few modifications.

190 points for a win, no bonus points.
Every driver is eligible.
Points reset before the Daytona 500 and are finalized after Homestead(36 races).
