Washington was the force of character we needed, but was generally a strategic disaster. Greene is way unsung.

TJ was the philosopher who broadly shaped what this representative republic would be.

Literally America's greatest generation and TJ was the glue while GW provided the regal character.

Washington because of his leadership

Franklin and John Adams, because of their diplomacy.

Benedict Arnold, the hero of Saratoga, captor of Ticonderoga (thus providing the artillery which forced the British to abandon Boston) and the greatest field commander in the history of the United States Army.

every liberal doesn't start out a liberal and does good for the country, but they end up screwing it over. :p

Not defendiNg Arnold's actions, but he was royally screwed over by a few important members of Congress, and Gates, who was extremely jealous of both Arnold's military ability and the extreme loyalty of his men. Conveniently, Granny Gates failed to mention Arnold in his report following Saratoga, and made sure that Congress never got Arnold's report.

This was a great thread, until someone started polluting it with their partisan hackery.

Good thread. Tough to beat Washington though.

True, it's no comparison, but th discussion of underappreciated guys is great. William Alexander, 'Lord Stirling', was another of the good commanders who has vanished in history

I don't see how it could be anything but Washington.

To me, another figure I've always liked was Thomas Paine.

My aunt's (through marriage to my uncle) maiden name is Hart and she's a direct descendant of John Hart who signed the DofI. She is in the Daughters of the American Revolution, so that's kind of cool.

What's wrong with partisan hackery? I'm very partisan to what is right, as opposed to what is wrong. For instance, I'll take Tennessee over Alabama every time...

i had watched a show about the revolutionary war. They said the Jewish population gave a great deal of support to America's soldiers.
