Here's the NY Times Story

http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2010/06/28/us/politics/AP-US-DOJ-Russia-Arrests.html?hp

10 arrested, looking for another.

I was just having a conversation the other day about the the importance of maintaining vigilance for those in national security or policy positions. This should serve as another reminder that there are always individuals like this looking to place themselves into positions of influence or confidence.

I would be interested in the reason the feds were on these guys in the first place to intercept a message like this. Or was it the result of the much ballyhooed spying on international communications?

I heard it mentioned on CNN that some of the individuals were to known to have contact with members of the Russian UN mission, which tipped them off that there might be something there. The message could have been intercepted as a result of resulting surveillance...or it could have been more random....

Two of the individuals, Donald Howard Heathfield and Tracey Lee Ann Foley, lived one town over from me in Cambridge. They were posing as Canadians living here. Heathfield had quite a few ties to Harvard (two advanced degrees in policy and government) ... figures :). It's not a bad place to build acquaintances if you want to plug yourself into the policy world.

I like how that correspondence was so cut and dry. You'd think if you were sending something to a spy it'd be a little less obvious.

I guess that depends on how you were sending it, how secure you thought your communications were, and how much you let a false sense of security affect your tradecraft.

The immediate presence of the "Spyware" google ad after posting this is good for a bit of a laugh.

Tell me about it!!

What's the Russian word for jihad?

First there was 'detante' and then 'glasnost' and 'perestroika.'

My questions, who leaked this to the flaming bundle of twigs at the NY Slimes and why??

Bigwigs at Harvard were very supportive of Adolph Hitler's socialist experiment in Germany.

Having actually earned a living at intercepting communications myself, one must assume that no communication is secure, no matter what.

Methinks this is a diversion of some sort for reasons you and I probably have no clue.

It smacks to me of the Valerie Plame fiasco.

Anyone actually beleive that Russia is the only country doing this. It is happening every day on all levels of government. Local and state levels are probably move of a long term scenario, but with a far greater effect long term. Doubters need look no father than California and it's Mexican influences. Socially, economically and politically.

Wonder how many Chinese spies are here. I'm sure there's quite a bit of intellectual property theft that is state sanctioned.

Anyone who thinks we aren't doing the same thing is highly delusional.
