Good read from a Michigan website

DON'T TWEET AT RECRUITS.

Annual PSA: DON'T TWEET AT RECRUITS - Maize n Brew

I suppose you can if you really want to, but trust me, it's not a good idea. As a Twitter user who was in high school not long ago, I can say with confidence that as a HS junior or senior I would have been both annoyed and weirded out by middle aged men tweeting at me and telling me what to do with my life. I can also safely say that 99.9% of high schoolers feel similarly. So regardless of what you have to say, just don't do it.

The exceptions are:
-when a recruit has signed with UT a simple congratulatory message and a Go Vols is typically ok. But please don't gush, that also comes off as creepy. And do NOT subtweet (negatively tweet) at a recruit who chose to go elsewhere. It's a very bad look for yourself and our fanbase.
-if you happen to know a recruit personally (like actually know them, not just met them once for 2 minutes) then it's less creepy as long as you don't harass. Make sure they know you have their best interests at heart instead of just you wanting them to play at UT.

Seems fair enough. Considering I don't have a Twitter no need to worry about me. But I can definitely see what he means

Just for clarification, subtweeting and negatively tweeting at them are two different things.

Subtweeting is when you tweet about someone yet don't put their real name or Twitter handle in your tweet. An example would be like if a recruit committed elsewhere and you tweeted out something like "Enjoy watching the Vols play in the national championship from your couch next year." Not tweeted at them, with their name, or handle included. Weird, obsessive, creepy, but nothing wrong with subtweeting in the sense that they won't see it unless they follow you.

Negatively tweeting would be like tweeting that same message directly at them, including their Twitter handle in the tweet. Don't do that.

Ha! The best thing a middle aged man can do is just don't tweet at all. Jeez, Facebook is bad enough.

That is true... but technically subtweeting is a form of negative tweeting. Subtweeting a recruit would just be weird anyway, because they probably wouldn't see it.

Don't follow as well

I've seen countless tweets from recruits saying "get so-and-so's followers up." Social media like Twitter is 100% popularity oriented. I can understand how tweeting at recruits more than "go VOLS" is obnoxious but as a whole Twitter is designed for mass interactions of the like.

Here's another thing to never do to a recruit or current player...

Don't send a 2 page letter to the player's parents with a pen, asking them to get the player's signature for you and send it back in a self-addressed and stamped envelope. It's creepy enough that you know their address, and beyond creepy to send them something like that!! And yes, this did happen.

Which recruits autograph were you trying to get?

Yeah, subtweeting a recruit is super weird. But as long as they don't follow you there is no harm to anyone except one's self esteem.

I never use either and never will....

I know it seems noble to take a big stand against social media. But to be honest, they're just tools used to connect people.

Twitter is like the millennial generations version of watching or reading the news. It's not really a creepy place. It doesn't have to be.

I've seen just as many creepy things posted on this website. Which is the same exact thing. Just more focused directly on Tennessee athletics.

So you're really not taking much of a stand at all if you still spend a good portion of your day talking to people online here. It's all internet connectivity. It's all the same.

But whatever.

I don't have a Twitter nor would I ever tweet a recruit, but I'll give you the obligatory "thanks dad" post. People will for the good or the bad, and posting something like this is kind of hilarious especially following it up with your specific rules of the trade you made up. As if you've got this figured out and are sharing your wisdom 😂😂
