Good read from a Michigan website

DON'T TWEET AT RECRUITS.

Annual PSA: DON'T TWEET AT RECRUITS - Maize n Brew

I suppose you can if you really want to, but trust me, it's not a good idea. As a Twitter user who was in high school not long ago, I can say with confidence that as a HS junior or senior I would have been both annoyed and weirded out by middle aged men tweeting at me and telling me what to do with my life. I can also safely say that 99.9% of high schoolers feel similarly. So regardless of what you have to say, just don't do it.

The exceptions are:
-when a recruit has signed with UT a simple congratulatory message and a Go Vols is typically ok. But please don't gush, that also comes off as creepy. And do NOT subtweet (negatively tweet) at a recruit who chose to go elsewhere. It's a very bad look for yourself and our fanbase.
-if you happen to know a recruit personally (like actually know them, not just met them once for 2 minutes) then it's less creepy as long as you don't harass. Make sure they know you have their best interests at heart instead of just you wanting them to play at UT.

I would hope most recruits realize any fans who follow or stalk them as high schoolers are idiots anyway. And every fan base has its share of idiots.

Does everyone that thinks it's creepy to follow a recruit on Twitter ever read the recruit's tweet thread in this forum? It's not any different. You can follow them without being creepy about it.

Never tweeted, never will. But then I'm an old fart that doesn't even like talking on the phone. I guess Volnation is my source of social media.

If I were a recruit, the whole recruiting forum on this site would creep me out

I tend to agree. But then again it's just kind of the way it is in college football. It's not just Tennessee. It's really not like anybody on here is obsessed with who these kids are as human beings. We're all just trying to see how many good players we can stack on our roster. We all just love football really.

I had a moment at the Vol walk to open the 2014 season. I was standing with my wife. And as players were walking by I was kind of pointing out the freshmen to her. And as he walked by I was like... "Hey look! That's Vic Wharton. He was our first commit!" And I swear Vic heard me say that cause his eyes darted right at me and he looked freaked out.

That was one of those moments where I kinda looked inward back at myself and was like... Is this weird? Am I being a psycho??? Hah I don't know.

I love following recruiting and I'm a depth chart junkie like everybody else. But it has to be a little weird to be a freshman who has yet to take a snap in orange and complete strangers already know who you are and recognize you.

That moment was probably the equivalent of tweeting at a recruit for me. I can probably keep those kind of observations to myself in the future.

I don't know what the solution is though really. It's a pretty weird game when you stop and think about it.

If you are using Twitter, you are likely not getting laid. To me that is the #1 reason to stay away from that useless garbage.

Feel free to tweet this to your followers.

Here's another thing to never do to a recruit or current player...

Don't send a 2 page letter to the player's parents with a pen, asking them to get the player's signature for you and send it back in a self-addressed and stamped envelope. It's creepy enough that you know their address, and beyond creepy to send them something like that!! And yes, this did happen.

Sab?

I know it seems noble to take a big stand against social media. But to be honest, they're just tools used to connect people.

Twitter is like the millennial generations version of watching or reading the news. It's not really a creepy place. It doesn't have to be.

I've seen just as many creepy things posted on this website. Which is the same exact thing. Just more focused directly on Tennessee athletics.

So you're really not taking much of a stand at all if you still spend a good portion of your day talking to people online here. It's all internet connectivity. It's all the same.

But whatever.

I would agree that you can be just as creepy on here as you can on Twitter. Personally, I think it's worse to directly try to reach a recruit on Twitter or Facebook, but yeah, both there and here aren't good looks. I'm not even sure what's worse; gushing to some 17 or 18 year old because they decided to go to UT, or yelling at the same 17 or 18 year old because they didn't. The easy answer is don't do any of it.

I would agree that they are both extremely tacky and ridiculous to do.

But just using Twitter or Facebook the way they were intended is not inherently creepy. You can follow people you don't know because you are interested in where they go to play football. Thats not a weird move. If they are actively tweeting then they are looking for followers anyways. Most of the people I follow on Twitter are people I don't know (which is not the case on Facebook). And it's not all about recruiting. There's a whole world of topics out there worth exploring.

Some people suck on twitter, some don't. The key is cutting bait with the ones that suck and finding good people. You can make it whatever you want it to be.

Facebook is much more difficult to make interesting. You know who you know. And being friends with strangers can be really weird on there. I wouldn't advise it. But it's a cool way to keep up with people you don't get to see much. It shouldn't replace real life friendships though. If that happens, it's a problem and you're doing it wrong.

Sorry for the long rants. I just find these conversations interesting. There is kind of a generational divide with this stuff. Some folks are stubborn and refuse to use certain sections of the Internet due to misunderstanding how it actually works. They hear of the dangers (some true) and decide its probably best to just stay away (which is totally fine). And then others (which tend to be the younger generation) use it because they don't even really know what the world is like without it. It's always been around and they learned about it at such a young age that it's kind of ingrained in them. Recruits fall under this category.

There is no right or wrong I don't guess. Just different points of view. None of this stuff will drastically change your life most likely. They're just tools to connect. Just like Volnation.

I remember all the death threats Rashaan Evans from Auburn got after he flipped to Bama back in Feb 2014. I couldn't believe how many grown men and women that was harassing this young man and his family. Talk about some people who really need to get a life! I guess it's the Harvey Updike syndrome😁
