finebaum: is saban cracking up?

This is the same head football coach who was unable to retain a single assistant coach when he left Michigan State for LSU. The story goes that Saban sent the LSU plane up to East Lansing to pick up his old staff after he was introduced. The plane returned with only the two pilots.

wow, that speaks volumes

Great article, but with that being said, Saban just hired one of his old assistants from Michigan State.

And as of now he has a top 5 recruiting class. But always good to see bama having issues at coaching.

i can't help but wonder about the lose an assistant to duke comment though.

I don't think there's any doubt that he chews up assistants and throws them under the bus to his personal advantage. would wear thin quickly and that's proving itself out.

However, he can coach football and he can flat out recruit.

i remember that there was a head coach in the nfl many years ago by the name of lou saban. he bounced around to four or five teams (most in the old afl). one commentator called him the "larry brown of football". i wonder if he's any relation to bama's coach?

Funny stuff. What goes around comes around... as dishonest as he is with everyone ("I am NOT going to be the coach at Alabama"), not to mention the word on the street being that he's a big time prick, this isn't all that surprising.

Wonder how the 'bama nation will feel about ole $4 mil per year saban if he pulls another 7-6er out this year?

They are cousins.

The pressure to win national title at bama will soon get to saban. Bama fans want instant miracles for that $4.5 million per year salary, and will not accept 7-6 seasons much longer. One fan I know told me "Saban better win big next year" whatever that means.

They just need to install bug zappers around the concourse of Bryant Denny to pre-occupy bamers if they have another mediocre season.

they can write all the articles in the world but he's recruiting lights out right now...and he's pulling the best players from the state of Tennessee

I'd say losing the last four regular season games including at home to Louisiana-Monroe was a pretty big gash to the pride armor of Saban lovers.

Saban is well known for being difficult to work for. Bobby Williams has been with him just about everywhere Saban's been, so I'd have to think he knows how to work with the Nicktator.

Lou Holtz had the same reputation, but he was successful. Other coaches, like Bobby Bowden and Fulmer for that matter, are probably too easy on their assistants, but are still successful.
