They did this to the Wizard of Oz long before Karate Kid.
I don't mind them remaking films like The Wizard of Oz or The Karate Kid and recasting because ethnicity is not important to the concept of the films. The concept of Annie is a young girl being adopted by a millionaire. It's set prior to WWII so the orphanage system fits into the movie. Due to the concept, Annie must be white. You can move The Wiz forward in time and Dorothy's ethnicity doesn't matter. With Annie, if you move the concept forward in time, you run into the problem that most orphanages began closing after WWII in favor of foster care which dramatically changes the concept IMO. In order for a black cast to be realistic, the movie would have to be set no earlier than the '70's, though the '80's would work better. Then you have the previously mentioned change in how orphans are handled. You have to adjust the film for that. Once you do that, then you're establishing a movie that may have its roots in Annie, but you've changed it enough that you might as well give it an original title of its own.
It's not that I mind seeing movies remade where previously white characters are recast as black characters, but it should make some kind of sense, and in this case, it doesn't really make sense.
I don't think this movie will be terrible, not great, but not terrible. Kinda like Karate Kid was.
I think Jamie Foxx will save this movie like Jackie Chan did the Karate Kid, though I also don't think Cameron Diaz can pull off the mean she needs to be Mrs. Hannigan properly (though comedic wise she seems to be fine)
Karate Kid was terrible. I'd rather watch Karate Kid 3 100 times in a row with Robocop 3 and The Guyver playing in the background. Will Smith's kid couldn't act his way out of his socks.

The kid doesn't bother me. Cameron Diaz might be a stretch
I'm wondering what Diaz is suppose to be in this movie.
I'm mostly damn shocked I see a trailer for this movie in May, or early may when amazing spider 2 was released when summer hasn't even started.
Seems as logical as thanksgiving advertisements n April, or may, or college football season advertisements when mlb starts.
Hollywood doesn't want to take chances on originality so they keep reusing what's already been done, and proven successful.
Hoping jaws doesn't get remade that's a masterpiece that shouldn't be touched.
