First Speeding Ticket

Wow that's a long time without a ticket

I ALWAYS go to court if I can

In Knox Co I went to court, then went to driving school. The "instructor started by asking who was there for DUI. About 90% of the class raised their hand. He then said, everyone else can leave.

In Anderson Co I actually had to stay there for 3hrs on a Saturday

Granted this was when I was in college so I had a lot of free time. But it never went on my record or affected my insurance

After that it was about 5 years and I got another ticket. Showed up to court and they tossed it completely. Only took about an hour of my time

I could see 40 in a 25 affecting insurance just because it could be considered reckless instead of just going fast

Welp - it finally happened. Been a licensed driver for 40 years and I got my first ticket today - 40 in a 25 zone.

I'm guilty but not happy about it.

So what's the best course of action - officer said I could go to court to see if I could get driving school. Worth it?

Any chance going to court gets me off the hook completely? Are there typically additional court costs I have to pay beyond the ticket. Officer was coming towards me so I'm not sure if it was a radar read or an estimate.

Why didn't the ******* just knock it down to 30?

just a hunch but I pulled onto a small street to turn around before I knew she was coming.

she asked me if I was visiting someone or just trying to hide from her. I didn't know what she meant but I told her I never even saw her. Later I realized she thought I was ducking up a side street to ditch her. Wasn't the case at all.

The municipality that wrote it doesn't consider it reckless.

If it were I'd definitely contest it.

That being the case, I'd say you should be fine either way. Assuming you don't have a ton of accidents, I can't imagine that a speeding ticket would force your insurance to rise considering a good record all around

It shouldn't be any big deal. Insurance may not even surcharge you for it if they don't happen to run an mvr on you prior to issuing your next renewal.

My one and only speeding ticket happened when I was 17. Was headed to a shoe store where my boyfriend worked to get shoes on his discount. Wanna say my ticket $65? So I basically paid an extra $52.25 for the shoes.

I would go to court. Tell the judge this is the first ticket you’ve ever gotten. It’s possible he cuts you loose or dismisses with court costs.

The majority of the time the insurance will never know about the ticket unless you tell them. Nobody in their right mind would do that. Allegedly in Alabama your violation will put 2 points on your drivers license. You have to get like 12 points in a 2 year period before license suspension is even brought up. In Alabama the points stay on your record indefinitely BUT after 2 years they don't count against you. If you want to have a perfect record then consider driving school, otherwise just pay it and move on with your life.

Both my dad and sister saw their insurance go up after a single ticket. Maybe it depends on the insurance company?

Perhaps. I think the insurance company would have to actually pull your record each year from the DMV to see any tickets or infractions.

Lucky and strategic. On the Interstate I usually do 8 over or so. Most of my over the limit driving is on twisty roads and in the twisties. This was one I frequent and the cop was coming the opposite direction. Didn't think anything of it and a minute later she came up behind me with the flashing blue.

It was only a matter of time.

She? Maybe she wants you bro.....

If you were black she would have at least tazed you... probably put a cap in your ass too. White privilege IMO.

there was definitely a defensive approach to the vehicle and discussion before she came up to the window - I'm sure no plates (we don't do temp tags here and the car was 4 days old) added to the suspicion.

Did a little research and it backs this up (and what GA said). Costs them to pull the MVR and they may only do so for new customers/quotes or at renewal or at some predefined interval (eg. every two years).

I'll just call my agent and ask him if it will change my rates

Not sure about Alabama but I got one in Georgia earlier this year. Went to court and agreed I'd go to driving school, pay the fine, and the points wouldn't go on my record

Do traffic school Points then aren’t on your record. That way if you get another, it won’t hurt your insurance as bad. Here in OH can go every three years. Traffic school is only a couple hours and the cops running them tend to be nice. I’ve done it a few times.

Go to court, plead guilty, ask for your license to not be charged any points. You will still pay court costs and fine though. But you actually have to go in front of the judge to get points reduced/eliminated.
