First year head coaches rankings by athlon

Pretty ridiculous...every coach on that list inherited talent aside from Gus, Buthc, and Colorado's coach. Those three should be tops IMO but I see where this guy is coming from.

Edit: and I am referring to the ones that have had remotely any success thus far.

Maybe I'm being too much of a homer here, but I think Butch deserves better than a B+. The columnist didn't consider his recruiting, which has far exceeded expectations, or how he has re-energized the fan base and how he has successfully brought former players back into the fold. Given where Tennessee was just less than a year ago, he earns an A+ in my book!

Gus Malzahn inherited talent. The last coach just botched it.

The article isn't titled "grading first year head coaches that inherited dumpster fires" so if we're just looking at first year head coaches, the others listed should rightfully be listed above CBJ. But, IMO, I wouldn't trade CBJ for any of the coaches listed in the article.

I don't give a $h1t what that columnist has to say. We know Butch gets it and that he should grade out an an A or even A+.

I would suspect Vol fans would know better than most that recruiting rankings aren't the be all, end all of cfb. You cannot truly evaluate a recruiting class until the recruits have been here a few years.

Sure, the odds on a highly ranked class turning out well are good, but we've had some colossal failures here at UT.

CBJ has a much higher ceiling imo. Not completely sold on Gus yet to be a national title contender consistently

Looks to me like they are leaning way too hard on the record. CBJ has taken a broken team and somehow put it back together stronger than it was to begin with.
Lets see what happens to these rankings after we BEAT the red guys.

I think at season's end bUTch moves up this chart a good bit if we keep this momentum going and finish in the season at a very possible 8-4 or so

Agree hiker.

Recruiting is a big part of a HC's job.

I'd give Kliff Kingsbury 1st honestly. He's doing great things down at Texas Tech and he's quickly becoming one of the hottest names in college football coaching. I know Tech is his alma mater, but I could totally see him hired to an SEC position in the next few years.

To be fair , you can't really count recruiting , till after signing day ......not to be confused with I really like where we are sitting right now

Could you imagine Kingsbury somewhere like USC with the Qb's and Wr's he would pull? Plus the lack of D for most of the PAC 12?

I think it's funny that in the preseason these magazines raved about what a great hire Bret Bielema was and had him ranked above Butch. And I agree that they are comparing apples to oranges in many cases. Malzahn and Helfrich inherited fully stocked teams that they were both familiar with already. Would they be able to do the kind of job Butch has at Tennessee had they been hired here?

Disagree with Gus not inheriting talent. He, by far, has the most talent of any new SEC coach for sure. We'll see this firsthand in a few weeks and Auburn will be difficult to beat because of it. Plus, he's a good coach returning to the school that he helped recruit to just a couple years ago. Unique, positive situation for him and the barn.

I understand what you're saying, but when one coach is leading another coach 59-14 in the 3rd quarter ,imo for a neutral person, it would be difficult to put the coach with 14 ahead of the one with 59 in a best of poll
