Any words of wisdom on how to improve grip strength? Specifically hanging from a bar. Maybe cause I'm old, but the part of my hand below my fingers seems to get in the way so bad. Is there anything I can do to improve my grip?

You can improve grip strength by exercising your forearms, as your finger flexors are really muscles in your arm. Try forearm curls with light weights (dumbbells or a light barbell), resting your elbows on your legs in a seated position. Let the weight roll out to your fingertips on the down-rep and go slow. You can also grip a weight plate in the same position and hold it at 11-o'clock and 1-o'clock with your thumbs touching. Hold until fatigue. Then, do the same at the 9 and 3 position.

Hope that helps.

I just finished a month of negative/eccentric focus with decreased weight, then back to pushing the heavier weights this month. I really think it helped to change it up for a while.

Kettlebells swings.

I was big into kettlebells about 3 years ago. I never thought much about it, but there was one day at work one of my pilots was goofing around and acted like he was gonna push me down the stairs. I in turn grabbed his forearm to catch myself and pull him down. For the next 3 weeks he called me "******* gorilla grip".
