Five Stars to UT?

This thread should read "No five stars for UT" - title is misleading, and suggests a new commit.

Except for that pesky question mark at the end of the title...since I was asking about potential 5-star recruits to UT. I probably would have used an exclamation point to announce a new commit. :)

My thought is that our best chances for a 5 star out of the 2010 class will be Powell, Lattimore, or Elam, but all of those look like longshots at the moment. I do think we pull a top 5 class however, which will set the stage nicely for a No. 1 class in 2011.

How important is it to have the #1 class as long as the players we sign produce on the field? I don't see CLK signing a 5-star he doesn't believe in just to improve his class ranking. Doesn't success on the field trump recruiting class ranking?

I bet if you look at alot of the real good talent in the NFL most of them were 4 stars or even less. Stars really don't mean alot to this staff, talent does.

Who cares? I trust our staff recruiting the needs for this team. Fulmer thrived on 5 Star recruits and managed to get beat by teams with a bunch of 3 and 4 stars. If the people who are doing the ratings knew anything about football talent then they would be called coaches instead of putting their best guess on the internet for fools like us to see.

Agreed, in fact, stated in the first post. But Kiffin has said he wants a No. 1 recruiting class, and that realistically means we have to sign a 5-star or two. Don't get me wrong, I have 100% confidence in this staff's ability to identify a 2-3 star player with potential and coach them up to a whole different level. However, I'm wondering if there is a way, at this point in the 2010 recruiting season, for us to get to No. 1, or top 3. I feel very confident that we will have enough surprises at the end to move into the top 5. Guessing the possible ways CLK can achieve his goals is part of the fun here!

Kind of hard to sign five star players when they are docked a star when they show interest in UT.

FWIW, I think the staff will pull at least a couple of huge surprises. They had a lot less time to work with last year and still produced an amazing class.

ALso, with our focus on the OLine to close out our class, that takes away a lot of the 5-star options. I honestly dont see how Ambles and the Byrnes Duo are not 5* players.....but who really cares?

With only ~20 or so in the entire country, no big deal at all not to get one.

I personally think that the star system of ranking is of secondary importance to how our staff evaluates the talent. However, CLK has stated one of our program goals as a No. 1 recruiting class, which generates buzz, which in turn helps recruiting.

I think you answered your own question.

Getting the guys you want is more important then creating the illusion that you are getting the guys you want.

I agree that we should trust in CLK and the staff than the stars. This staff is out getting the athlete they need for their system and not concerned about the stars. I think things are going to be a nice surprise in the next couple of months for us in how this class shakes out.

There are some very very talented players on TN's team this year but what this staff has done with some of the 'less talented' players (including several walk ons) bodes well for what they can do with the raw material they'll be bringing in for 2010 regardless of what the team's final recruiting ranking is. This year's team is down something like 22 scholarship players for various reasons - that's almost an entire recruiting class in raw numbers. I couldn't be happier with our current coaching staff and their performance in 2009.

Currently Rivals shows us with 12 4-star commits and no 5-stars at this point. I personally think that the star system of ranking is of secondary importance to how our staff evaluates the talent. However, CLK has stated one of our program goals as a No. 1 recruiting class, which generates buzz, which in turn helps recruiting. With less than 3 months to NSD, does anyone have any thoughts on 5-star players on our board who are likely/probable to end up wearing orange next season?

Althought getting the supposed #1 class would be wonderful to be able to tell everyone, its really not that important. Tennessee's biggest needs are at lineman (offense and defense) and their are as many 5* bust as their are great players.. Plus alot of 5* players dont really fit into the type player our staff really wants.
I want UT to get as many quality 3 and 4* players at lineman as we can.

Didnt UT have a number 1 class a few years ago and after 4 years it looked horrible. several never got in academically and several were major bust.

I wouldn't get to hung up on a 4* recruits and a 5* recruits...there are only around 20 or so 5* recruits in the nation (according to rivals). It's rare that a school will land more than 2 in any given year

Great. Your point? the fact is that if you had to count all the 5 stars that came out and had stellar collegiate carreers and good Pro careers, it wouldnt be much more (if any) than the three stars. The number 2 pick this year to the rams wasnt even a high pick at all. The rankings are getting better, but the rankings dont know how a player will react to the college game. i.e. james banks.

Because there is only like 25-30 Five Stars a year.

If you were to add it up over previous years there is a much higher percentage of 5 stars that make it to the NFL than the percentage of 3 stars that make it to the NFL. Doesn't mean there aren't going to be amazing players that are 3 stars, but odds are better for a player that is a 5 star than a 3 star.

UT's best chance at landing a 5 star this year is if one of our current 4 star commits/targets gets bumped up.

And UT has been mentioned by almost every 5 star kid this year at one point or another. UT just couldn't seal the deal with them.

I believe Corey Miller is on track for a 5th star...as long as he does well in his AA game.
