Fixing The Problems

One thing that astounds me is that we see the same problems game after game...
Failure to box out on rebounds.
Failure to pick up the other team's 3-point shooters.
A center with poor hands who has trouble catching the ball.
Both starting posts who bring the ball down when they do catch it.
Poor ball reversal on offense.
Etc, etc.

There are drills for all these problems. WTH are any of the coaches doing in practice? Do they not recognize the problems? Do they not know the appropriate remedial drills? Or are they teaching these things but the players just forget or ignore their training once they get in the game?

CHW etal are getting a lot of heat for not straightening out these problems, but I think the players aren't paying attention to what they're being taught because a lot of the solutions are pretty fundamental.

Its not about X's and O's, its simple talented athletes have to play hard, then they are able to utilize their talent, but no heart, no mental or physical toughness makes all those All Americans look average. They have to WANT too all the time.

Right now, its all mental. We have a team of mental midgets. We can play good basket. We have seen it. Once we become a tougher team mentally and physically night in and night out, for 40 minutes and become a coachable team, we will be in every game. We can be an Elite team, right now, its Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde, so that tells us its more mental.

The leader of this team is Diamond. We all know that, so it starts with her.

If players are not engaged and are going through the motions, have no energy or effort, no matter what Holly calls, or run, it won't look good or they prolly won't run it. I love the Lady Vols cos they were a reflection of me, mentally and physically strong, you have to be if you want to shoot for excellence or win championships. We have a huge upside, moreso than any other team, and the great things is we have time...

This team have to believe in their talent, the team, the system, the program, the coaches and most importantly themselves. I hope these women embrace the tradition of Lady Vols basketball. We are Lady Vols basketball, which means we produce the toughest women on Earth!

Fire, Holly, wuteva. I still feel like we are one year away.

I recommend, all players having some session with a sports psychologist.

Prior to the start of his first season with the roster left him by his predecessor, Rick Barnes watched Kevin Punter in off season work outs. He saw that with work Kevin could run the offense as the point guard. Kevin had a good aptitude for basketball and he was receptive to being taught. He noticed Kevin's shooting motion was quirky, which caused him to be hot or cold on his outside shots. So CRB went to work with Kevin, a senior, to change the shooting motion he had developed since a child. Kevin, being a good, not great, basketball player agreed to change to the method CRB wanted to see and went to work on it along with his handle. So he started the season as a PG, which he had never been before. If you follow the men's team, the result has been outstanding. Kevin is the leader and top scorer. All facets of his game are good. He is second in the SEC in scoring at 23.1 points per game, only .4 behind Moody. He plays 34 minutes per game, which is about double what it was last season. How could this have happened?

You will not see this type thing happen with Holly. She cannot communicate it even if she knows what to do, which is also doubtful. She is 4 years in and regressing despite having been the top assistant to a basketball HOF legend for decades. This is your new normal, LV fans. She tells the world she doesn't know what else to do after each inexplicable loss. How will the expected losses be explained?

The roster she has cannot bang - they are not strong and bulky enough. They are thin and quick. She recruited that roster. So to run a double post half court offense is insane. The D is not tenacious. It needs to get that way and needs to play the passing lanes and go for steals with more players hitting the boards because they do not bang and box out. Constant motion should be their theme. The offense has to stay transition. The best players need to stay on the court for longer periods. She is over substituting. They cannot get in a rhythm shooting. If the shots are not falling from your best players, they need to keep shooting and the others need to be hitting the boards for some bunnies on rebounds.

Meanwhile if she cannot see and correct the obvious flaws with the shooting motions of many of the players, well, expect more 25-30% shooting nights and more losses.

The best comment in this thread is that we need a new guard coach.

THe most doubtful is that the rest of the team is listening to Diamond. I have no more inside information than anyone else here, but I would bet my sneakers that the rest of the team resents DD's lack of team play on offense and laziness on defense.

Who on this will challenge Diamond, like Nicky did to Parker?
