Returning
Simmons - 11 Tackles
Terry - 19 Tackles
Garland - 16 Tackles
Thomas - 18 Tackles

Losing
Butler - 47 Tackles
Blakely - 29 Tackles
Tremblay - 18 Tackles
Wouldn't have realized Terry would have the most tackles out of the returning guys.

Exactly. X's and O's he wasn't a terrible coach (not excellent but not bad). It was all the other stuff. He just seems to be a jerk so dealing with people (players, coaches, administration and media) seems to be a weakness and what ultimately did him in.
The Peter Principle applies. If he's smart, he'll never attempt to be a HC again. He just isn't that kind of leader.

I was surprised too. But..

And Butler with more than Simmons, Garland, and Thomas combined. Big loss there.

And not the guys won't step up and stats will go up as those minutes become available. But it's a position where you want your guys to be fresh and not playing on an empty tank, there's a lot of injuries and missed games/seasons at that spot, and our offense causes our defense to be on the field a lot and play lots of snaps. 6'3" 310 lb guys aren't the easiest to find either.

Terry and Thomas will be a heck of a force after this off-season of more development and getting bodies right. Terry was contributor all year and Thomas really started to come on late. We need Simmons to get his butt on field and stay there.

Butler played almost every snap. These new/young guys should make a huge step 2d year under RG plus more minutes

I agree and I’m looking for Simmons and Terry to make huge jumps and Bailey looked great last Spring and was a big time recruit
Yep, expecting big step forward by Simmons (has to stay healthy) and Terry; however, I think Thomas takes a step into All SEC talk. He showed the flashes this past year...there were times he was completely unblockable, and lived in the backfield.

Turned into a monster that last half of the season. You could tell he was coming into his own.

Safe to assume they all improve to some degree with Garner.

Our transfer progress has been depressing, but today I've been feeling a little better looking at all the guys we have coming back at every position. Still need splashy transfers, but even as is there's going to be a lot of improvement just from guys getting older, coached up and as they understand the offense and defense more.

Like to see Omari get into a little better shape...agree, he could be special.

Very true. He is not a bad coordinator though, despite what most on here seem to think.
I think he is a good teacher of the game. But teaching someone a technique or recognition isn't the same as higher level coaching.

Sort of like when NCO's go to OCS to become officers. Some struggle to lead as officers. Their best strength is hands on leadership and supervision.

I also suspect that Pruitt doesn't have the requisite level of intelligence to be a HC. I'm not saying that in a malicious way.... just in the sense that some people are naturally more intelligent than others. I'd have a hard time believing he has an above average IQ.

Simmons made a difference when he was healthy. Thomas really started to flash late in the season. Terry had his moments and seems like a really similar player to Thomas. Garland has been a solid contributor in the past but didn't get many opportunities until later in the season. I think Garner will get good production out of the d-line. They were actually playing pretty well the first half of the season but it looked like injuries and depth caught up to them. They definitely need to build more depth at DT and get a couple of young guys at DE to step-up. The roster should be in better shape on the d-line next season, so having enough bodies shouldn't be an issue outside of injury problems.

It’s taken 2 years, but you might have nailed this one, Bass.

Auburn is going to be bad. Harsin won’t make it. Something definitely is not right there. We know first hand that a HC firing his coordinators after one year is a sign of future bad endings
When's the last time we didn't have any staff turnover in the on field coaches? Exciting to see coaches wanting to stick around under Heupel.

Robinson with 4 years to play would be a huge addition to the defensive line. Best wishes to him for a productive trip to Knoxville this weekend. The success and development Terry had as a transfer under Coach Garner was commendable and something I am sure Robinson will learn about. Vols certainly need this transfer player.
