'19 FL QB Brian Maurer (Tennessee signee)

Did he ever start first and 1st and 20?..you forget he was also in the red zone lol can someone get the tape of JG’s first ever O&W game so we can compare the stats😭😂😂
Maurer definitely looked better in his first O&W game than JG did. But the question isn’t who was better in their first spring scrimmage, it’s who is in a better position to lead the team in fall 2019. Virtually nobody outside of message boards is questioning the answer to that question. It’s hard to make an intelligent argument that JG isn’t the best guy to lead the team the offense in 2019. Will that be the case in 2020 once Shrout has had some experience as backup and Maurer has had a year to adjust to CFB? That’s a much more interesting question.

it’s ridiculous that everyone is literally beating down a freshman that showed better awareness and mobility than a 3rd year JUNIOR QB IN JG,Jarrett has always lacked both and hasn’t improved any in “3 YEARS”.🤷🏽‍♂️
JG’s development has been frustrating to say the least. However if you’re saying he hasn’t improved at all over his time on campus, you’re either being hyperbolic or willfully ignorant.

Geronimo hasnt looked good in any games ive seen. consistently makes boneheaded plays, holds onto the ball too long; and wants the deep ball every down.

Granted its a team effort. Hate to be negative, but he's got to check down.

You watch Auburn game?

There's no question that Butch stunted nearly everyone's development, but JG has had a new OC every year (one that had no business being an OC). Plus no credible QB coach until last year. I expect him to become a more than serviceable SEC quarterback over the next two seasons, with a chance to be the best SEC quarterback in 2020 with a second year under Chaney and a much improved OL.

Did his 2 interceptions and fumbled snap impress you that much?
Hey don’t take context into consideration or anything that’s a really good look.

Maurer clearly showed ability. His over confidence led to one really poor decision, and then the second pick was a slightly underthrown ball where Tank made a fantastic play. He moved well in and outside the pocket and has a strong arm. He’s been on campus for less than a full semester.

I must be missing the post where I predicted him the starter - or even #2 QB - come fall.

Read more. Post less.

Jump balls

Completed passes to 9 different receivers. No turnovers, over 320 yds, 20/30 which 2 where jump balls, ( unless it fits your agenda then they would have been back shoulder throws), everybody’s SEC player of the week (except yours) all this on the road but he didn’t look good to you...daaamn!

Because Some posters can't handle the slightest criticism of JG. And for whatever reason, seem to take it personal when another QB is mentioned as possible competition.
Ehh its like 50-50 JG defenders and haters on here. I think it’s pretty equal as far as to which side starts the conversation too.

And to be fair there are SOME POSTERS that can’t stop themselves from taking shots (personal or otherwise) on even unrelated threads. 😏

It’s JGs job to lose and I wouldn’t bet on him losing it. I think we can all agree that he hasn’t had much help on the O-line his entire time at UT, and barely any run game support. That’s really affected his growth, confidence and development. Not saying he’s been mistake free. He clearly holds the ball too long and CJP pointed that out at the end of spring practice. He’s got work to do personally, but I’m hopeful Cheney can scheme around this and get him some opportunities to make some plays. I don’t think handing the keys to the offense to a kid whose been on campus 3 months would benefit anyone. And from what I’ve read Shrout seemed to get the most praise from coaches this spring, so I’m not sure why some posters think Mauer is the next big thing.

It is, Vols 30 is just one of the loudest JG haters.

I don't hate him. He gives 100% every game. I don't think he is an SEC QB though, and I don't think we win 5 or 6 games with him at QB. I didn't see the progress from his first year, and I think the offense is limited when he is at QB. Yes, he played good at Auburn, but what other game stood out?

Games don't necessarily have to stand out for him to be decent or even slightly above average which I think is his ceiling. Plenty of college QBs have won a lot of games just being good enough with a good team around them. A better team and Jim Chaney will do a lot for his development imo.

It is totally unfair to judge JG until we get better OL play. NO QB is going to look good behind an OL that can neither run block nor pass protect.

It’s no coincidence that the games where the OL happened to do the best job in pass pro were also JG’s best games (Auburn and UK). The OL was just very inconsistent, and as our OL went, so went our offense.

I'd guess 60-40 in the RF. At least in the extreme categories.
But, like @butchna suggested, you have to take loudness into account also. Even the minority are capable of equal noise.

Personally, I'd love to have real QB conversations without getting jumped by either side. But haven't seen that happen the entire time I've been here. And it's *almost exclusively the QB, you can discuss pros and cons at the other positions. Just weird.

All the other positions are terrible, haven't progressed since day 1 and aren't SEC caliber.

That better?
