FL RB Trey Sanders

There's a lot of knocks on Butch as a coach. Recruiting isn't one of them

He was a horrible recruiter! I don’t just look at who they get but how they get them. He lied way too much and told the kids what they wanted to hear.

That's a very good point. He was a good, not great, recruiter as far as getting some talent that a good developer could make competitive. But as you said, he lied to do it and it's hard to get people to buy in if you lie to them.

They all do that. They tell every kid what they want to hear to get them there. I’ve been through it and know allot they have. It’s part of the game.

Florida State is expected to be a major factor with Sanders. They have the hometown advantage and they’ve already been recruiting Sanders, who doesn’t have an offer yet from the Volunteers.

But Charles Kelly, who is expected to join Tennessee’s staff as the special teams coordinator/safeties coach, has a history with Sanders. Kelly was Sanders’ primary recruiter at Florida State (along with, interestingly enough, former Vol Jay Graham, who is following Jimbo Fisher to Texas A&M).

(For what it’s worth, it doesn’t appear that Jeremy Pruitt was a big part of Sanders’ recruitment at Alabama.)

I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Vols offer Sanders in the next couple of weeks (I also wouldn’t be surprised to see Clemson and Texas A&M get involved).

So do the Vols have a good shot at landing Sanders?

That’s impossible to know right now. There’s a lot that can change between now and 2019.

They certainly have a better chance with him than they would if he was a 2018 recruit. Perhaps the Vols immediately turn things around in 2018 under Pruitt. If that’s the case, you’ll see a huge uptick in recruiting for Tennessee (maybe similar to what Georgia is seeing under Smart?).

Butch didn't think he had a chance of landing him and therefore in his mind, didn't waste time on him. This happened with many positions including cornerback which is why we are lacking in talent at those positions. Pruitt already sees this and is recruiting top tier corners right now to fill this void.

Trey Dean was going to be a safety for Butch. He and Pruitt don’t mix very well...happens. I wouldn’t trade the aggregate talent we’re now in for over that one stray miss. JJ Peterson, Griffin, Walker?

I asked about Dean earlier but didn’t get a response. We tell him to look around or what? I would think he’s the type of guy Pruitt wants but what do I know

They didn’t mesh when Pruitt recruited him for Bama. Seems to be exactly what Pruitt looks for in a cb.

The word was that he didn't have the hips to play CB. Couldn't turn and run well enough to play CB.

Yup. Not athletic enough for corner, not physical enough for a Pruitt safety. That's why he'll ball out at safety in practice settings where he isn't taking on blocks.

Haven’t the rave reviews from the camp been about his cb skills?

just saying that things weren't as bad as some people want to make out. dean could end up as a bust. but if he had gotten those reviews while committed here people would have been extremely happy.
