I see why the game has stayed in Jacksonville, given the impact it has on the city. It's just curious to me how that became the tradition to begin with.

Maybe it is because Tennessee doesn't have such a game, but 2 heated rivals and storied programs never (or almost never) playing a game on the other school's campus is just bizarre to me. Texas/OU is the same way. It's just wild that UGA has played in The Swamp twice in the school's history, in 1931 and 1994. UF has played between the hedges 5 times. It's like saying Alabama has played in Neyland 4 times or something. It's just weird to me.

I have been in Alabama most of my life. Back in the day, when both Alabama and Auburn had crappy stadiums, the big games were played in Legion Field. At one time the ticket distribution was 50-50, like the WLCP. It made for a fun rivalry because there was no home field advantage. As things morphed, Auburn returned to campus for their big games, Bama played more games there and the Vibe was that Legion Field was by default, a home game for Bama.

I few takeaways from this. Bama has some kind of stellar record in Bryant Denny. Be aware they played all the powderpuff games there in the sixties and reserved Legion Field for the big ones. Yes, during the Saban era, Bama has still won a lot of games in Bryant Denny - not knocking that, but the stadium record is a little skewed based on how crappy that stadium was back then. Also, it showed the power (for both Alabama and Auburn) of those living in Mountain Brook and the elite suburbs of Birmingham. Those alumni were perfectly happy to NOT have to drive to Tuscaloosa or Auburn for games. It took way longer than it should to move that game out of the slums of Birmingham.

For me, living in Huntsville, it was great, because we played in Legion Field every year, alternating between Bama and Auburn. 100 mile drive and there you are.

I’ll freely grant that it’s a weird thing to have ended up this way, but the cocktail party has to be experienced. Listen to Munson’s call after Lindsay Scott scored a late winner against Florida—“do you know what is gonna happen tonight? And up at st Simon’s and Jekyll Island and all those places where all those dawg people have got those condominiums for four days? MAN is there gonna be some property destroyed tonight!”

That is what CFB is.

That said, I wish they went home/home for the next two years. Playing in the Benz in particular is overdone.

From what I heard, both teams, or I should say Athletic Depts, feel pretty good about the neutral site games because they bring in a bigger gate than they would at home. As a college football fan, I want the home and homes. I think just about any game on campus is better. I think to keep Jax involved it would be cool to play that game every 3rd season. Meaning a game in Gainesville, a game in Athens and then the next year in Jax. I know that won’t happen, especially w/ the games temporarily in Atlanta and Tampa, but I think it would be cool for the sport.

Do they still call it the "World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party? Or was that done away with like the Tennessee/Kentucky Beer Barrel?

The only Tennessee vs Alabama road game I've ever been to was the 1993 17-17 tie at Legion Field in Birmingham. Alabama fans celebrated like it was a victory afterward .... Kinda weird since they were the defending National Champions, had beaten us 7 straight times, and they had been favored to win.

Legion Field was a dump .... and not in a very good part of town either.

The schools, conference, and networks stopped calling it that back in 2006. (Honestly, the city of Jacksonville - when hosting it - stopped calling it that back in 1988.)
