I for one am glad to see the spread option go:

In a few short weeks, the Florida Gators will take on the challenge of learning an entirely new offense. New plays. New terminology. New schemes. New formations. New philosophy. It sounds daunting, maybe even potentially confusing, this abrupt spring move from Urban Meyer’s spread-option offense to Charlie Weis’ pro-style attack.

“Charlie Weis’ track record speaks for itself. Based on past experience (with Weis), they’re going to run a handful of plays out of multiple formations and take advantage of mismatches (like Spurrier did so well at UF). I think with (quarterback) John Brantley coming from a passing offense in high school, he’ll be able to adjust and help the receivers as well.

All I know is I am 22 years old, and the last time we beat these guys I was in Jr. High. I do not care what they run as long as we stop them, and Bray plays good enough to lead us to victory. Obviously we couldn't beat the spread so hopefully this change will be a good thing.

I'm just glad I can mock Weis with Goonies references on a regular basis...

"John Brantley coming from a passing offense in high school"

WTF?!?!?

It's been five years since Brantley took a snap in high school. What in the hell would that have to do with next season? More applicable experience in high school than under Meyer? Matthews is a dork.

i bet Gator fans are going to have very little patience with the offense, considering theyve gotten to watch a very effective and exciting spread offense for several years now. its not going to be easy to learn a pro style offense, when your team has been built, entirely, for the spread.

I would agree. I think that we are better defensively against pro style teams as opposed to the teams that run the spread.

Do you remember last year's game vs Florida....anytime they needed to move the ball or get a key 3rd down conversion...they went to the pro style offense and were successful almost every time. Not hating just remembering

Brantley is more of a pro style offense QB rather than a spread option QB.....

I posted this last year before our bowl game, but I'm telling you he looks like an old lesbian.....I had a pic comparing him to that Chas? Bono he/she thing but I lost it....

i'm sorry, i must have missed last year's exciting spread offense.

by the end of the year, our best offensive play was either a kickoff return or a qb run. no joke, this is literally true.

people do expect florida to be improved offensively because how much worse can you really be? but, people are not expecting the offense to go up and down the field at will.

I remember a fake punt that I wished didnt work quite so well.

actually that tennessee game showed how brantley and that offense were messed up during the course of the season.

against tennessee, brantley completed about 7 3rd and long situations for a 1st down.

now, i don't care if florida were playing against air......at the end of the season if florida had a 3rd and 10, we would either throw a 2 yard pass and if that wasn't available, a check down route behind the line of scrimmage.

the sad thing is, i'm not exaggerating. brantley eventually became the team's 3rd and long specialist who was brought into the game to complete a pass 7 yards short of the 1st down.

like 2005 or 2008 for tennessee, despite the fact that there may be a new coordinator with new terminology......they will be better.

question is will they be good or mediocre. but, again, mediocre would be an improvement.

That was Eric Gordon mostly. Carl Moore killed him all game. He is clearly not a big-time corner. He got burned in the Georgia game too. And he fumbled twice that day. The secondary has been a problem at UT before Meyer got to Florida. Henderson and Haynesworth went titleless because 3rd down was a freebie against us. 1 yard on first down. 1 yard on second down. then pick on Miles or Gaines for an easy throw and catch. In 2000, we did not get a pick until the Alabama game!! We need to get serious at the corner spot to take next step. Geno would be a step in the right direction.

Yaw's O last year was nowhere near as bad as ours in 05 or 08.

You're right about 3rd and long...for the longest time our best defense in those situations was the droped pass.Hopefully coach Wilcox is gonna change that.

if i may, let me provide some insight into the gator 2010 spread offense.

a qb (brantley) that could not run..... but, we'll run the option with him in september and see how that works out.
no fullback
no tight end
no big ball carrier
an unwillingness to throw the ball down field, thus making it harder to gain yards on all the dink and dunk stuff.

the answers to those problems came in the form of......

a freshman qb (burton) that they would not allow to throw the ball.......ever......if only to keep the defense honest.......ever. also, the starting tight end.
take that same freshman qb and have him play fullback
take the guy you are starting at tight end and let him be the big ball carrier (reed)
continue to never throw the ball down field, potentially keeping a defense honest.

add to all of that.......players ticked off about week to week solutions to these problems, wr's tired of being the fastest blockers in college football, senior offensive linemen who let defensive players come through the line totally unblocked, chris rainey making it rain and jeff demps getting hurt, and an inability to snap the football a few times a game.......

and you get florida's offense in 2010.

we had 25 yards of offense after 3 quarters against miami of ohio.

scored 7 points or less against fsu, miss state, alabama, and i'm going to count south carolina (because while the scoreboard says 14, 7 came on a kickoff return).

the only good news (and call me arrogant if you want), but florida's struggles had nothing to do with the opponent whoever it may be.

The struggles will now be fitting a square peg in a round hole so to speak on offense.

Also, Muschamp is going to go through some growing pains, be it on the field coaching or recruiting.

You all need to be patient down there in the Swamp
