If being right on the beach isn't important, look into Niceville or Crestview. Niceville is on the water, just not what I consider the beach per se. If you wouldn't mind being farther down, I hear Sarasota is amazing.

But, I have an ex that lives in Florida so the entire state is contaminated.

Have you considered Gulf Shores? I know it's Alabama but it's relatively reasonable, family friendly and doesn't completely die off during the offseason. Mobile, a relatively good sized city is 45 minutes away.

I would not buy anywhere other than Cape San Blas or St. George Island in Florida. Just personal preference.
