On the way home from work yesterday I was listening to 3HL and they were discussing how the athletic department bought the entire football team SEC/National Champs style rings, except with a slight difference.

The rings say "State Champions" on it in reference to beating Florida, Miami, and South Florida in the regular season. I guess when you lose to Houston in the bowl game and don't win the ACC you have to have a claim to fame for something.

This is just sad though. What a monumental waste of money. Is FSU a high school team now? 3HL was ripping FSU.

I never understand why people lose their minds over who gets a ring for what or who celebrated what. It's just a team momento. No need to read into it beyond that.

It's one thing to get your team a Bowl Ring, even for the bottom tier bowls, and be happy about that. Or to have a trophy for a specific rivalry game.

This is a different kind of stupid. It's extremely childish. FSU accomplished nothing last year. Won no bowl game and didn't win their conference. This is the prime example of a "participation" trophy that awards people for trying and accomplishing nothing.

I'm pretty sure I stopped worrying about state championship rings when I graduated high school. It's just a monumental waste of money. I can't imagine 80 bejeweled rings were cheap.

Maybe the promise of a cigar, if you win, wasn't working.

I think it's a waste as well, but it doesn't really make any difference to me. If they want to make themselves feel better for not accomplishing anything, that's on them.

or how about rings for defeating all of your in state rivals?

It would be dumb if it was just Florida they beat, but beating three other teams from the state seems like enough of a rivalry to justify the rings. I wouldn't call them state champs because that does harken back to high school.

I'm not calling them state champs. Their rings literally have those words on it.

And would you really consider South Florida a rival of FSU? Come on.

They won games they were supposed to win, and lost games that mattered. Giving a team a ring just for beating Florida and Miami seems pretty stupid. Would you want Butch to give our team rings that say "State Champs" on it for beating MTSU, Vandy, and Memphis?

Not to get too far off topic, but wouldn't that be a cool year?

OOC opponents: Memphis (AA), MTSU (CUSA), and UT-Chatt (I-AA). Plus Vandy in conference, of course. Four games vs in-state opponents. Pretty cool idea.

Of course, Ohio State or Clemson would have to be our other OOC game to offset the weakness, but ... yeah. :)

Not a thing to do every year, of course, but would be fun to do once!

p.s. No "state champ" rings, though. No thank you sir.

MTSU and USF are a wash. Vandy and Memphis have nothing on Miami and Florida; not the same. If USC/Standford/Cal/UCLA or Texas/Baylor/TCU/Tamu/TTech/Houston did it I don't think anyone would begrudge them that. and honestly those are about the only three states that could do it without being dumb.

and I was agreeing on the state champs thing, thats dumb. rings themselves are not. they just need to figure out something better to put on the ring.

That's where we will just have to agree to disagree. I don't believe you should just make a ring for anything. It trivializes the meaning of more important accomplishments. Some will disagree with me there, but this situation here is just ridiculous. Cool, FSU beat two okay teams last year. So what.

Purchasing a ring just for essentially beating two good teams is dumb. Once bowl rings even started become a thing for the non BCS bowls I started to groan at that, but I think bowl rings are the extent of acceptability. Other than that, you should only get a ring for conference championships and national championships.

I will say it does seem like they are doing this because they won nothing else. If they had stated at the beginning on the year they were doing this for sweeping the state I would feel different.

It's a more meaningful accomplishment than giving a team a Gator Bowl Ring.

Personnally, i think bowl rings and this idea are both stupid

Of course it's stupid. But the reason we think that is because we're over the age of 22.

I guess when both Florida teams lose their bowl games, this would be the expected excuse to making a "State Championship" ring sound like an acceptable reason.

To commemorate the historic 2011 season, Les Miles decided to put on one side of LSU's SECC ring the fact they finished second to Bama's 21-0 beatdown in the NC game.

Not hard to imagine what side of the ring still gets their focus 30 years from now, every time they look at their SEC ring or show it to the grandkids.

Another bad idea.
