Football record this millennium..

Yep. Agreed.

It is possible to cherry pick the years so that the Vols are #1 (one example: 1926-2001, see below), but that's all it is, cherry picking.

Which is just what the OP did (and that, I think, was @tennesseeduke 's main point). There is no football significance to the start of the millennium. Other than the first twenty years of the new century including the WORST dark ages of our program's history. Which makes this an awkward thread to start in a Vols fan forum, and may lead some to conclude the OP is a shill of some other program just trying to create angst.

It is enough to say that we are one of the ten winningest programs in the history of American football. That, and how we did last season, and how we're doing this season are really the only three pertinent questions of this nature.

Go Vols!

I think each decade is sort of neat to track. We were the 5th winningest team in the 90's for example, but I agree there's no real significant sea change reflected based on decades, centuries, etc. I think integration is probably the biggest sea change that there has been in terms of the sport truly being much different after than it was before.

I would say that it was time for a change when Fulmer was fired. I think he had grown complacent, and with the addition of Saban and Meyer in the league things were not looking good. I also think that from the moment Hamilton made that decision and probably even before that decision, everything he touched went to hell. So yeah, firing Fulmer, hiring an incredibly immature guy, and then panicking when Kiffin left and hiring a completely unqualified coach sent us into a tailspin that could’ve been avoided.

Hamilton had Kiffin HIRED (verbal agreement) prior to firing Fulmer. Hamilton then proceeded to hold interviews with other coaches as if intending to perhaps hire them when he already knew he had his coach. So then, when Kiffin bailed, those same coaches he talked with the previous year would not speak to him, including Gary Patterson. Would not take his call.

Agents talk. Coaches talk. that fraternity was well aware how Hamilton operated.

What is the significance of that time period? For example, I've seen people track the SEC era (1933-present), the AP poll era (1936-present), before & after total integration (in 1972) and before & after the SEC split into divisions (in 1992), was wondering if that period had some significance other than starting the year before Neyland and ending Dooley's first year.

EDIT:
Looks like we were 4th winningest in that time period, but had the 2nd most wins (behind OU).

I'm not sure firing Fulmer, along with the subsequent hires, were unilateral decisions of Hamilton

he had to get buy in from prominent boosters prior to firing. He was told by the most prominent, don't screw the hire up or you won't stay here. subsequently, that is why he left because of screw up in hiring. AND, the Pearl fiasco was also a factor.

I’ve also heard that he gave Kippie Brown a completely sham interview. Is that true? IMO Brown should’ve been made interim after Kiffin left.

True. He was flying back to interview Kippy when J Haslam told him they settled on Dooley. He proceeded to interview Kippy anyway.

How in the world did they settle on Dooley? It was just a lack of options bc they burnt so many bridges?

I know for a fact, a fact, that Mike Hamilton single handedly kept us from hiring Cut because he wanted to make sure Kippie Brown was kept on as WR coach and wouldn’t let Cut bring his guy. Ironically, both wide receiver coaches ended up in the NFL, even more ironically, Kippie coached under Pete Carrol at Seattle.
That must have been after Kiffin.

For a fact?

I'm not trying to be a smartazz, but I don't believe we went 9 deep before anyone would talk to us

I said contacted. Didn't say how many talked to us and how many did not.

you're right, we did not go that deep without some talking. I'm certain one of my previous posts might have led you to that conclusion but was not my intent. I know of two that refused to take Hamilton's call after he had misled them the year before.

Not taking as you being a smartazz either.. thanks for the feedback.

I’ve been told by guys on Cut’s Duke staff (former Tennessee guys that followed him) that they were told to go home, tell their spouses or girlfriends to pack up bc they were moving back to Knoxville. Cut had taken the job, but the hang up was he wanted bring Scottie Montgomery (WR coach ) and Hamilton said that Kippy Brown would be retained. If anyone knows the history on Cut, they know he is fiercely loyal to his assistants and wouldn’t budge. Therefore, Cut’s hiring was held up. That is something that has told to me by more than one person.

I do remember the Kippy Brown situation. Your explanation makes sense.

All traditionally strong programs have gone through down years. Many have returned to prominence. Nebraska is about the only one who hadn't been able to turn it back around. Also, Texas to a degree

It feels nice not to be in the Nebraska category right now. I do think Rhule will get them back to respectability before too long. I think this is a huge year for Sark too. They should be picked to win the Big 12, and I think they could go down to Tuscaloosa and give them a game again.

Cut would’ve been much better than Dooley heck anybody would’ve been.

Huge year for Sark it’s year 3 he has recruited well now it’s time for Texas to win the Big 12. I still have my doubts though that he will. He is a strong recruiter a very good OC but he has yet to prove to me that he is a top level coach so far.

Cut won 10 games at Duke. I think would’ve done a very good job here. I think he had a ceiling, but he would’ve made us a much more desirable place to be than when he found it. Doesn’t matter though, i love where we are with Heupel and everyone in the University finally rowing in the same direction.

I didn’t deflect from Fulmer. I said he was the single biggest reason for the demise of our football program. He fumbled every major decision. Our athletic department suffered under his watch as well.

Had it not been for him, we would not have had our last two SEC championships and, our last NC.

Are you saying Hamilton was the single biggest reason for the demise of the football program? Of course, there really wasn't a "demise"

Hamilton is the single reason our demise. He fired our HOF coach and sent us in a tailspin.

Fulmer should’ve won two nattys and a couple more SEC titles at least. Let’s face it for the all the talent he had especially from 1993-2001 he really underachieved.

I can see why you think that, but I doubt he had that kind of unilateral power. I'm not sticking up for Hamilton by any means because he was certainly out of his element as AD.

As for Fulmer, our 2 SEC championships and 1 natty weren't solely because of him, as you suggest above. If that's the case, 3 of our 4 losing seasons of the past 30 years were because of him. 2 as coach and 1 because he made the worst hire of all time on the hill. Any NCAA action against us is his fault as well
