Sadly, a very telling commentary on the state of our football program

I agree. When I used the word mediocre earlier to describe this group I used it in reference to SEC standards.

Any of these teams can hover in the rankings below the Top 10 and be in danger of dropping out the following week.

I've watched a lot of football thus far, and this might be true of all but the top 4 or 5 teams in the country.

I don't think the DL is as responsible for our poor run defense as the LB's are. The DL played very solid in the ASU game. Our LB's don't make any plays against the run. They are out of position and never get off blocks.
Karl i expected to be a disappointment, shows how thin we are at a place that coming into the year was considered a strength. He wouldn't start for anyone one else in the sec not even miss st.

Mayo, well he and heffney can share the "Who has sucked the worst this year award". He is consistantly caught out of position and doesn't seem to be learning from it.

Mccoy has been the best of the bunch this year. He has a motor, but he is still learning on the job.

Overall the linebackers are maybe the biggest disappointment on the defense. It doesn't make sense how poorly they have played.

I'd agree, but I would expand the number to 6. Oklahoma, SC, and LSU appear to be for real, Florida probably is, and I still think the verdict may still be out on Cal and West Virginia. I'm not sure there is a lot of difference, though, between #7 and #40.

the problem with WVU is that we will not get an answer until a BCS bowl because their conference is about the 11th toughest in the country, behind the MEAC at 10.

Arian Foster looked like a top flight RB and kick returner against Cal. That's about all I need to know about them.

West Virginia has an offense that can be included with the elite teams... but their defense is still suspect at best.

Stafford played fine but I didn't walk away from that game thinking he is a great SEC QB. Maybe he'll develop into one. To date, he hasn't lived up to the hype.

Hard to say if any teams in the SEC other than Florida and LSU have been very impressive. SC beat GA who beat Bama who beat Arky. Each of these teams have weaknesses and won their games based on some breaks here or there. Only one (SC) has played a top level team and they were dominated by LSU more than the score showed.

UK is playing solid but Arky has been shown to be one dimensional and have serious breakdowns in coaching. The win over Louisville is looking less impressive.

In short, I think you can throw a blanket over us, Arky, UK, UGA, Bama and SC. Anyone of these teams could blow-out the other or win a squeaker.

While I haven't given up hope for the season yet, our defense has been so suspect, I fear that teams that can run the ball -- like Arky, Bama, Caro, and GA -- will simply run us out of the game. Until shown otherwise, I'll be seriously worried about how we'll do in each of those games.

Dateline: Neyland Satdium.
1. I think someone should tell the young women working the concession stands that wearing a shirt that says "Sodexho" isn't the way to go.
2. One of the worst travel days of my life. I'll put details in the Pub later.
3. It was good to be back home.
4. UT better find some defensive line men, else the season really stink.
5. Jill has Pres Pub working like it used to.
6. Les Miles busted out the whoopass play.
7. Jim Harbaugh's team lays dowm for nobody.
8. Coach Fulmer taking points off the board was smart and tough.
9. I guess evaryone who called Matt Stafford a stiff is lined up to issue an apology.
10. Tennessee beat a team that is far better than the cognecenti think.
Someone should tell all the girls and ppl who go to the games just to text message and wave at ppl on thier phones to go home. It is ridiculous. Have the people leave at halftime and stay on their phones the whole game.

Then there would be no hot girls in Neyland at all. But I agree, a small percentage of folks at the games are there for the social atmosphere, but at least we're not Old Mess, where everyone is there for the party and the football game is a subplot.

Add Cal to both of those comments and you'll explain my "?" beside both teams very well. There is a reason they aren't in the top group, but I'm not ready to drop them to second tier just yet either.

There is separation between the very good and the extra-medium, and I still think it occurs somehwere around those two teams.

Yeah, it was probably a once in a lifetime chance to see my three favorite teams on successive nights. Stoops said playing on Friday was a one time only deal. This weekend, it's the "U" vs. Duke on Saturday and the Raiders and Dolphins on Sunday.

The U will roll if they play like they did last week. The have some real speed on that team. I hate the Phins go Raiders. By the way do you wish the Raiders still had Gruden or no?
