For anyone who denigrates Tennessee's 2022 SOS

I'm looking at the ESPN chart. OSU 81 SOS - 1 GC - 6 SOR. UT 16 SOS - 2 GC - 1 SOR. I don't know the equation they use to rank OSU over UT with these data points. This is proof FPI is a garbage number. Can anyone come up with a formula that used these data points and ranks OSU above UT? This doesn't make common or mathematical sense.

Texas being top 5 in the FPI until this week makes me question their formula

Article published, you mean. Relevant text:
When you look at the original link that I posted, there are several variations of the SOS ranking as well as all the other rankings. They are all subjective. My point is that when arguing about who's on one must first define which calculation they want to use to measure the results.
I think this is where all the banter comes from. Everyone is looking at different rankings that use different calculations. There is no standard. One has to understand the calculations used.

Absolutely! It's far from simple, and it's inherently opinionated because of how difficult it is to quantify it. Even if you set out to decide which schedule is strongest using unbiased metrics, you have to decide before you start which metrics have value.

That said, I think that writer's use of last year's final records to rank strength of schedule doesn't say much about the teams. It could say something about how difficult they chose to schedule, but that is far from perfect because those schedules are mostly completely at least a year in advance and include mostly conference games. I think the reality in this case is that the writer (who gets something like $20 per article on the current structure of SI) wanted to finish a piece in under 30 minutes and used data easily within reach.

Who was down on Tennessee's schedule? I did not see that anywhere...
When you read through some of the other team's message boards they bring up that Tennessee padded their stats by playing Ball State, and Akron. Now UT Martin. They completely ignore the four ranked teams. They diminish the ranked teams by saying they stink now.

Oh. You're talking about haters. Gotcha.

And we should be number one in both polls. And I do believe that we will be number one in the first college football playoff rankings if we beat Kentucky...

They completely gloss over the fact that the Vols average 50.1 points per game with 4 ranked teams on our schedule.

And don't forget that Ohio State has played 6 of their 7 games at home, against lesser opponents. Tennessee gets to play Kentucky this Saturday. Tennessee gets to play Georgia in two weeks. If Tennessee takes care of business they may get to answer the doubters that think the elephants are still better if played on a neutral field. The playoff games would answer the rest.

Clemson has played 3 top 25 teams and beat them
Cool, btw the Tennessee Volunteers have beat 4 top 25 teams. After this Saturday it will be 5, then Georgia makes 6, and most likely 7 vs Bama again in Atlanta. Call it a pipe dream but the Tennessee Volunteers are 7-0 and ranked #3 in the top 25. Just some facts mixed in with some speculation. Call me a fool, but we have the chance of beating 9 nine, top 25 teams after we get this Natty.

Those numbers don't even match up. If you add up opponents wins and losses,
Clemson's opponents have played 57 games
TN opponents have played 52 games
GA opponents have played 51 games
AL opponents have played 50 games
MI opponents have played 47 games
OSU opponents have played 46 games

How have Clemson's opponents played 11 more games than OSU? Something does not sound right with these numbers. If they are correct, sure your opponents will have more wins if they played a bunch more games. And as stated above, SOS makes a big difference on the win column.

It would be based on bye weeks. I'm not really sure why the discrepancy though. Southern teams tend to take bye weeks later in the year and northern teams tend to take bye weeks earlier in the year, maybe?
