For those that like stats.

any Vol fan that felt like this team was going to be up to the level of the 2022 team was just setting themselves up for a major disappointment. Too many effective losses from offense with replacements that don't come close to where those we lost were at.

It'd be one thing if we went from #1 to #9, or thereabouts. We've fallen off -39, -56, -62. It's VERY VERY alarming. And that's against AP, VA, and FL team that was humiliated by Utah 2 weeks earlier.

Squirrel may well be really good, but it’s hard to compare him to Hyatt considering who Hyatt had throwing him the ball vs who White has throwing to him.
Squirrel will be really good. It's doubtful he will have 15tds in a season though. It will be broken again at some point im sure.

Not to state the obvious, but you can’t really compare an entire season’s stats to another season that’s only 3 games in. Let’s wait until at least halfway through before we look and see if the defense has improved and the offense declined that much.

that should tell us the level of talent is not at # 9 but closer to # 50. It is what the numbers say.

I don't think I've seen anything stated but what if Florida is truly as bad as many (not just UT fans but lots of media and pundits also) felt before the season. What does that say about Tennessee? Perhaps Tennessee is much worse than many (UT fans and lots of media and pundits) felt before the season. Time will tell.

For those that like to use stats to justify the rants, what should we say and think of our current stats?

Our offensive stats have declined significantly. We're almost dead last in 4th down. Who should we blame?

Our Defensive stats have decline some, but in the main areas where we were close to dead last a year ago,(Total D and Pass E D), there has been improvement statistically. So why the rants about how bad the defense is.

We still got alot of football to play. We are a team and we should all want both sides of the ball to improve and do better. The bashing of one side of the ball when that side is STATICALLY better in almost all major categories, makes no sense and is irrational.

Offense
-Total Offense #40 (#1 in '22) dropped -39
-Scoring Offense #57 (#1 in 22) dropped -56
-Pass efficiency #63 (#1 in 22) dropped -62
-Rush #25 (#1 in 22) dropped -24
-3rd down O #74 (#42 in 22) dropped -32
-4th down #110 (#12 in 22) dropped -88
-Red zone #56 (#3 in 22) dropped -53

Defense
Total Defense #37 (90 in 22) increased +53
-Scoring Defense #43 (#35 in 22) dropped -8
-Pass efficiency D #52 (#65 in 22) increased +13
-Rush D #57 (#20 in 22) dropped -35
-3rd down D #43 (#31 in 22) dropped -12
-4th down D #21 (#28 in 22) dropped -7
-Red zone #58 (#13 in 22) dropped -45

(Btw....these are not stats that I think actually matter, but many use them, so I decided to use this example.
Just to add: yards per play on defense: 22nd in the country, 4 spots behind Georgia and three ahead of Alabama.

Is it "The O-Line's Team'...or has it been described as "Joe's Team"? Who's the designated Leader?

There are TWO People ultimately responsible...
Joe and Josh...and they BOTH need to get their $HIT together.
Another bad take. You just don’t get it. Why are you giving the WRs a pass? How many dropped passes have we had? Joe had put the ball in their hands a bunch and they dropped it. But they don’t matter right? And your failure to accept the OL being the biggest issue shows your actual football IQ.

Has the season ended yet?

Do you recall week by week last year everyone talked about stats? The offense was ranked #1 I believe the first week. Thru the next few weeks they were Top 5 last year. Stats mattered each week last year, but no one wants to talk about offense stats no, because they don't matter. Imagine that.

Almost like all those stats showing a decline in everything on offenses might have a common theme of a weak OLINE
Let’s be honest— did you really not expect a decline in the offense. Hooker was sensational in this offense and it’s unrealistic to expect that kind of performance every year. Lost 3 good OL and experi receivers.
if you didn’t see some decline coming, you weren’t realistic. Now the decline is somewhat significant and we will see during the course of the season if it’s just taking time for the new players to jell, or if it’s more than that.

Some stats for Milton Haters...(according to secstatcat.com)

HH had 2.02 seconds of protection...also had a 16.4. % of pass deemed uncatchable.

JM has had 1.91 seconds of protection and also is 16.5% uncatchable

the issue is not JM...does he to make plays...yes... even more so with his feet..but every acting like he is JG is ridiculous....OLine is the weakness...give him protection and he will deliver like the bowl game

I fully expected a decline...I figured the Florida game a tossup...always will be at the swamp. Other then Bru, who is more like JJ and will be a late round or undrafted WR..no one else will get a look...I just get tired of everything being blamed on Milton. It's not the same team...we lost some NFL players that HH threw to...JM doesnt have that or the protection.

if you ACTUALLY want to do an apples to apples stat comparison, here it what the raw numbers look like.

we weren't the #1 offense in the first three games of the season last year....

2022 Ball state, pitt, florida, vs 2023 virginia, austin pea, florida
2022 Defense gave up 1352 total yards, 996 passing yards, 356 rushing yards, and 70 points
2023 Defense gave up 889 total yards, 532 passing yards, 337 rushing yards, and 55 points
we are giving up 35% fewer yards, 47% fewer passing yards, 6% fewer rushing yards, and 22% fewer points. nothing but improvement on defense, some pretty significant. even with a decrease in relative competition that is a significant drop.

2022 Offenses gained 1561 total yards, 1025 passing yards, 536 rushing yards, and 131 points
2023 Offense gained 1342 total yards, 727 passing yards, 615 rushing yards, and 95 points.
We are gaining 15% fewer total yards, 30% fewer passing yards, 13% MORE rushing yards, and 28% fewer points. mostly losses on offense.

and if you really thought we weren't going to see a drop off on offense I don't know what to tell you. we are playing without 3 starting OL, starting QB, 2 starting WR, our do it all TE, and our offensive coordinator from last year. We clearly aren't a Bama/GA and at a point where we will just reload. anyone thinking we were going to see another Hooker-esque performance was fooling themselves from the start. we knew Milton wasn't as good as Hooker was last year. we just hoped he would be good enough to not see a drop off.

the stats say Milton is about 70% of what Hooker was. how good would he have to be for people to not complain about him? Winning/losing the Florida game changes a lot of opinions, relative stats be darned.

Much better analysis...👍 I'm not sure this will be well received........there's alot of folks that don't like facts.....😁 Thanks.

Agreed, and if a fan brought up any concerns for this team (including saying that the UF game was pivotal to the season) during the preseason had them labeled a victim of BVS or a loser.
