For those who say UT is an "above average" program

Sorry I'm not buying into the Tennessee football program right now. It hasn't been great lately.

He said it's hard to be a POSITIVE UT fan. Not hard to be a FAN. It's hard to predict SEC titles when it hasn't happened in so long. It isn't hard to want them.

I'm not saying that you have to be an overly optimistic, naive, moron.

But, you stay behind your team even during hard times.

Not buying into the program because of recent successes seems to me to be very flippant.

And that has absolutely ****ing nothing to do with anything. Know why I have that? Because my dad grew up in Michigan, half my family lives in Michigan, and have family members that went to Michigan. You can cheer for more than one school.

Personally, I think it would be less gratifying and meaningful though. Two isn't a lot but I see some people who like a handful of teams in a sport and it just wouldn't be exciting at all to me if one of my many teams won a championship. I guess in this case, Michigan and Tennessee two of the all time winningest programs so one should be bound to win a championship at some point. Which would mean more to you?

I guess the only team I pull for that's ever won a championship is the Tennessee Vol football team. It will be special if any of them win a championship because I only cheer for one team in every sport. If I cheered for multiple teams and one of the them won a championship, I would just feel like a bandwagon fan being excited about it and bragging about it. Wouldn't it be odd if one year Tennessee wins and you get to talk crap to not only Alabama fans but the rest college football fans because your team is the best. And then later, Michigan wins a championship and you get to talk crap to Ohio State fans.

I guess it's just a personal belief but I don't see how it could be as meaningful when you have multiple horses in the race. Just curious but if Michigan wins a championship and you see Tennessee fans talking crap about Michigan, are you going to rub it into them that Michigan won a championship and Tennessee hasn't won one since 98? Or how would that work? Cheering for multiple teams just isn't for me. At least your teams aren't as weird as some of the people on here I've seen. Cheering for Alabama/Tennessee and Kentucky/Tennessee. That's just messed up. Cheering for USC is gross too.

Anyways...

This is the crap that irritates me...

And it's not just you. It's alot of people.

If UT turned into Vandy East and started losing 11 games a year, I would still be a UT fan. Wins and losses don't define my fandom.

Sure, winning is alot more fun than losing, but I am a fan either way.

Satisfaction is based on success, allegiance is not.

Being negative has nothing to do with allegiance to a sports team. See the fans of just about every team in every league in every sport on the planet. Being a fan doesn't mean you have to grit your teeth and clap harder and pretend everything's fantastic like it's your kid's soccer team playing.

UT. Easy. I cheer for UT against Michigan. I love both schools, but UT comes first. It's simple.

No. I don't talk **** about sports. Simply because it's just sports. I love them. They are my biggest hobby. But I'm not part of the team or anything.

No. Or I can just enjoy both programs and not even worry about that pointless ****.

I'm pretty sure if Dbake or I wanted out as a UT fan, we would have done it a long time ago.

What do you mean by "buying into"? I'm going to spend hundreds of dollars and virtually all of my Saturdays this weekend watching a team that I've rooted for my whole life, first as a kid, then as a UT student, now as an alumnus. I am "buying in" in a very real sense. But there's no rational reason to think that we're on the verge of a turnaround and are abruptly going to start competing for championships again. If not checking my critical thinking at the door makes me a fake fan, then so be it.

Well, if I haven't stopped being a UT now with the last ten years, I doubt it's going to happen any time soon.

Exactly... in many ways this has been the worst decade in the history of the program.

The Vols have got to win a helluva of lot of games to get the excitment in the program that hiring a new proven coach would do.

We're not even in college football conversations these days... much less in contention.

I guess i just don't understand the mindset of wanting to come to a message board where people are excited about the upcoming season, the opportunity for change, new direction; and wanting to vent my negative feelings toward the very thing all these people are excited about.

Would you walk up to a new mother who is swarmed by adoring onlookers and say, "Yeah, but all it does is eat and *&^%, and it's ugly....but I Love your baby". Just doesn't make logical sense to me.

And, i don't wanna turn this into an argument about what you posted 2 years ago, or even what you posted in another thread. I'm referencing the fact that OP posted a positive thread showing that he was proud of UT's history, and you pissed on him (metaphorically). Why can't you just let him be happy, and bite your tongue?

Well, that's true though.

You know how a message board works, right? People state their opinions on it. Both positive and negative.

Z is simply calling a spade what it is. You're overcomplicating it. It's put up or shut up time this season.

And what I was saying is that number, while nice, means nothing, since Fulmer has most of those players, and that those have not meant championships. He is trying to say we are not an "above average" program, while at the moment, we are.

That's dangerous thinking too...

I presented you a moral argument, and you turned it around by saying "Well, everyone else does it".

I'm asking why YOU would want to do that.

And if you wouldn't say what I stated to an adoring mother, why would you figuratively do it on an online message board.

Very hypocritical thinking.

Nice to see you back on the board, btw. Hope you stay around.

No, I would. Babies are hell.

For those of us that rode the wave of the late 90's first hand, we tasted the sweet nectar of success. We had a swagger. The younger fans certainly have more apathy, and reasonably so.

Subjective.

Historically...we're better than that.

Over the past two decades....we're better than that.

Over the past decade...according to his source....we're better than that.

The past five years...they've been rough, but they haven't shown up yet in his source's numbers.

So based on the source he provided, he made a correct statement.

If someone came to me, and said "Hey UT is not an above average program! We have the third most players in the NFL!", I would still say the same thing.

I really have no idea what you are getting or what you are trying to accomplish now.

UT hasn't been a good football program since 2000. Your thinking sounds like something a South Carolina fan would say.

Just been bidding time a bit. I suspect things are going north based on whatever happens on the field this season--with or without Dooley.

We need to win the 8 or so that we should, then add an upset plus a solid bowl game win to recover.

I don't think Dooley can do all that (there's absolutely no evidence to the contrary either). So, my bet is on going north without him. Dread listening to the excuses here, but, amazingly, it seems some have already started.
