If the Democrats remain in control of the House, Heath Shuler would like to be the new Speaker.

“If there is no viable alternative, I will be running for Speaker of the House,” Mr. Shuler said during a debate broadcast Wednesday on WWNC radio in North Carolina.

Mr. Miller is hoping to restore the district to Republican control. In Wednesday’s debate, he pressed Mr. Shuler for a commitment: “You’re saying you would not vote for Nancy Pelosi for speaker?”

“If that’s the alternative, I will be voting for myself,” Mr. Shuler replied.

“If she’s there you wouldn’t vote for her; you’d vote for yourself?” Mr. Miller asked.

“I don’t know how I can be any clearer,” Mr. Shuler said. “I can do as good a job as anybody in the U.S. Congress, because I can actually bring people together.”

What are your thoughts VN? I think the R's take the House, but if not?
I doubt Shuler has the support. Although, I haven't kept up with who would replace Nancy, if anyone.
Does he stand a chance?

Wishful thinking. There's no chance in Hell the Dems hold onto the House. Even if they did, there is no way he would beat Nancy.

I haven't followed his career very closely, but I've never gotten the impression that he was all that bright.

A friend is editor of the local paper. His impression of Shuler is that he is a good bit less than "not all that bright."

If you read his letters to the KNS the summer after he got drafted by the Redskins, you would realize that you are not far from the truth.

Pelosi isn't all that bright either, but that didn't stop her caucus from putting her second in line of succession.

I've not followed his political career all that closely, but I thought he was having some issues even being reelected in NC. Was that in the primary?

I have his Redskins rookie card (not sure where I got it). On the blurb on the back it calls him "a can't miss pro-prospect"....

Hell, you know he is not real bright when the words "If Democrats retain control..." leave his lips. Look I hold no fantasy that this is going to be a blood bath all around, but it's all but a done deal the house will fall Red.

Pelosi May Retire If (When) Dems Lose House

If Democrats lose control of the House of Representatives next week, as most political observers expect, there is a good chance that the House Speaker will opt to spend time with her eight grandchildren rather than toil in the relative obscurity of the minority. Even if she wanted to stay on, it's not at all clear that she would win the position of minority leader: seven Democratic incumbents and several candidates oppose her leadership — on Wednesday, North Carolina Representative Heath Shuler suggested he might challenge Pelosi for the spot — and another 20 have refused to say one way or another. Pelosi is more likely to leave gracefully, trading the red-eye slog for the pleasant commute between her San Francisco and Napa homes, and leaving the caucus in the hands of majority leader Steny Hoyer, who has been chafing in her shadow for decades.

It's a pretty common practice, but do you think Pelosi is willing to give up her power so easily?

I would love to hear what he had to say. Do you remember?

He wasnt well liked in DC, booed constantly. I remember Sonny Jurgensen giving an excuse for his poor play was that he hadnt adjusted to the bigger NFL ball, WTH

I know someone that went to high school with him, and she said that he was dumb as a rock. Of course, that makes him a perfect candidate for Speaker of the House.

He was basically writing a journal about his experience in camp and the journals were published daily (or semi-daily or whatever) in the Knoxville News Sentinel. His entries were filled with elementary school vocabulary and word structure. I mean, it really did look like a 4th grader had written the journals.

Along the lines of what I was going to say.
I know he was a successful college QB and real estate broker, but not my idea of someone who I would want giving a rebuttal to the Republicans minority whip. I think he stands no chance.

The only reason he said he is going to run against Nancy Pelosi is because he is really worried about his re-election chances. He might be going down.

There are alot of ads from incumbent dems here trying to distance themselves from Nancy, understandably so, though they are party line stooges regardless.
