Formula 1 Thread

By the way, happy to see an F1 thread and at least a fan or two here in the forums. I usually hang around the F1live.com forums during quali to get some F1 conversation.

Can you elaborate on your robbed by Ferrari comment? If you mean Barrichello, he competed a couple times with Schumacher but never consistantly drove at Schumi's level. And also, the rules on team orders have changed in the last couple years.

Schumacher has always been the number one driver at Ferrari, no questions asked. His team has always been in a supportive role. I'm not denying the greatness of Schumacher, I just wish Ferrari had put someone of comparable skill in the other race seat.

Don't think that was ever going to happen. Most teams don't like to do that either. Think Mercedez hit the gold mine with Hamilton and didn't mean for that to happen either. Like having to #1 QB's on your team. Creates controversary.

Yeah, you're probably right. McLaren has been a little better about having two equal drivers competing with each other, at least in theory. The Coulthard days, he was clearly number two behind Hakkenen and later Raikkonen. Renault played the Ferrari game last year and the year previous with Fisichella supporting Alonso.

I don't fault Ferrari too much, it's just refreshing to see something different. I think everyone was expecting Alonso to be the number one driver, but clearly Hamilton's performance has changed McLaren's approach.

True. It's so challenging being so narrow and everything though. I'd imagine it's quite an accomplishment just to go through the whole race without putting the car in the fence.

What are the best circuits for racing for the F1 cars, in your opinion?

I like Imola, that seems to always be an exciting race, and of course Spa is my favorite. Spa is one of those tracks that got me to fall into love with F1...it is sad that these tracks are becoming "obsolete" now and the cookie cutter tracks of China, Bahrain, etc. are become more prevalent.

The three oldest drivers in F1 look to remain there for 2008.

It's time for these guys to hang it up. Coulthard showed some flashes last year, but outside of one race where he drove exceptionally well early in the year to retire due to a problem with the car, he just has been there. Fischella...I don't know why he has always been rated so high. He had one race in a Jordan that he won which was a total fluke, and won some races in a darn good Renault, but where is he now? Barrichello, hard to say where he is at because that Honda is so horrible. What's going on there? They are getting beat by Super Aguri.

When I lived in Germany I took a bus trip with some work buddies to Imola for the race. Fun weekend. Schumi was behind most of the race before a pit stop got him out ahead. Fun day with lots of beer and drunk Italians everywhere.

Agree 100%. It definately is more refreshing and has made it fun to watch again. :eek:k:

F1 has always been about a main driver and a secondary driver. you can't fault Schmuacher for dominating the sport the way he did. he was just that much better than everybody else. i think the fact he was a World Champion with two teams further illustrates that point.

out of curiousity, you weren't satisfied with the past two years of something different? don't forget Alonso won two championships with a Renualt team that was behind for awhile. it's not like McLaren is setting some kind of new precedent in F1, by putting Ferrari dominance to rest.

i think at the end of this year, one of the two drivers at McLaren will be out, and i think it will be Alonso. McLaren would be stupid to dump Hamilton who could dominate the sport for the next 10-15 years. i can envision Alonso in a Ferrari but i don't want to make that bold of a prediction because i can't figure out if he's sincere in his comments about his team and where they stand. i have to think he's upset with the situation though, seeing as how his team his letting a rookie compete with him, a two time champion and a guy who clearly deserves the #1 seat for whomever he drives for.

all of that said, i wouldn't care if Ferrari won every single race from now until the end of time. and if McLaren finished last in the race from now until the end of time.

I was very happy to see something different in '05 and '06 with a new world champion and a new constructors champion after several years of Ferrari dominance. I'm not a huge fan of Renault. I've been a fan of McLaren for some time, and it's been a long draught, which makes this year much more exciting for me.

Alonso is a great driver no doubt. But the way Hamilton has driven has earned Hamilton an opportunity to be on equal status with Alonso. It would be a mistake for Alonso to leave McLaren as it would make it look like he was running away from a fight, and what other team that is near the top would give him #1 status right now over a current driver? BMW might. I could not see Ferrari doing it over Massa right now. The Massa/Raikkonen situation mirrors the Hamilton/Alonso a little in that the superstar has not dominated the "lesser" teammate, which means that no number one exists at either team, in my opinion. Makes for much better racing among the top teams!

F1 is more competitive then who wins in qualifying wins on race day. Yes, Hamilton is on a role and the last three races he's made look real easy. But, overall, a very competitive sport.

Agreed. You might could say that during the dominant Schumacher years, but you can't say that now. Anyone from McLaren or Ferrari could win any given race, and BMW appears to be catching up. Renault has fallen back a bit after winning the championship last year, Honda was won a race, but has slid to back marker. Williams, though lacking the funding of works teams, usually has a good competitive car.

Next race could be completely different, too. These teams have massive budgets in the 100s of millions, and are constantly improving trying to get an edge. Honda could unveil a new car in France and be competitive again. Doubt it would happen, but it could. :)
