From Mandel's mailbag:

Does the media really not see Tim Tebow for what he is? He is the most arrogant, egotistical figure in the history of sports. In classic "look at me, I'm Tim Tebow" fashion, he went out on Senior Day with another screaming fit that was complete nonsense. Everyone in America is so thankful that his time of basking in the spotlight is almost over. He will do absolutely nothing in the NFL and we will never have to hear about him ever again. It can't get here soon enough!!
-- Brad, Dallas

Andy Staples had a line in his column from Saturday's game that exactly mirrors my thoughts whenever I read comments like this one:

"Whether you consider him genuine or fake, Tebow, at the end of the day, is a Heisman Trophy-, SEC- and BCS-title winning quarterback who goes to class, goes to church and circumcises people less fortunate than him. More people should be so intolerable."

While I certainly understand why non-Florida fans are "tired" of Tebow hype, the fact that so many people are actively hoping for the kid to fail is a really sad commentary on society. Fortunately, there's no shortage of money-driven/steroid-abusing/wife-cheating superstars they can root for in the pros who don't have the audacity to quote bible scripture or high-five their fans.

I just can't wrap my head around my everyone hates him so much as a person. I mean, EB plays for UT and Ingram for Bama, etc. Outside of 60 minutes of football each season, if a genuinely good person plays for a hated rival I still wish they have success throughout their careers and lives.

Thoughts?

i'd bet good money tebow is on roids, so let's stop acting like he takes the higher road here.

Hang on he's almost gone. He will be drafted by one of the worst teams in the league were he will languish in ineptitude for years to come or not. I don't really care, but it will be interesting to see how it plays out.

I don't care whether he fails. I just want him to stop all the feigned humility as he's mugging for any camera he can find.

The difference is, those two are not talked about relentlessly in games they are not playing in.

Good point. But I can think of other athletes who have dominated and been talked about as much (Tiger, MJ as examples) who, as far as I've witnessed, haven't received the backlash Tebow has- especially from a personal standpoint. He's different for some reason, but nothing concrete that anyone can put their finger on. Worst of all, he hasn't done anything to piss any of his haters off personally. At least not outside of "he's on TV and is talked about too much." Which, to some degree or another, I don't think is completely up to him.

I respect his talent. I respect his faith.

I hold the media accountable for turning him into what he is today. I bet I know two dozen people personally, who have gone on mission trips in the last few years during their college spring breaks. But they don't grin for cameras crews who are tagging along to show how great it is to help someone less fortunate. He's a celebrity, and like it or not, he acts like one.

Jordan and Woods get references made in games they are not part of. Tebow gets a love fest that would make Adam Lambert blush.

VollyGirl is dead on, Its the media not Tebow.

I don't hate Tebow... If he didn't play for one of UT's biggest rivals, I'd probably like him. The media is annoying, and Tebow does seem to try to play into that, but I don't really mind it all that much. I'm glad UT doesn't have to play him again.

Tebow is a great player.

He is not the Messiah.

I do not like him, just as I have not liked many great players at other, particularly rival, schools. I resent the fact that he is often portrayed as some sort of messianic figure, although I admit that this is much more the fault of the media and his supporting fanbase than it is of the player.

i don't have a problem with him. i respect the guy, i'm not a TT lover or have a man crush on him. seems like a decent guy and the media made him into an iconic figure

50 bucks says he's the guy on the sidelines next year that reminds you of that creepy guy who graduated 3 years ago that keeps coming to school (wearing his letterman's jacket). you know who I'm talking about, everybody knows "that guy".

Tebow is nothing less than a tool. His smirk is intolerable. His man love with team mates and his coach is sickening when it's brought out of the bedroom and put on the football field. The guy cries on a podium when he loses - that screams of attention whoring of the first order.

Couple that with his bird man imitation after he plows for a two yard first down and you've got yourself a grade A douche.

Who cares? I'm tired of hearing Tebow's name coming from the tv every fifteen minutes, but if you were that famous would you not embrace it?

I'd embrace it by partying like a rock star and banging everything in sight. Not by being smug and playing the Holy card.

Translation- he beats Tennessee every year so I don't like him.

There's not a coach in college football that wouldn't want him on his team.

Translation- I can't contradict anything said so I'll respond with a mediocre comeback.

You can't fault the guy for it Two Bits. Very few people can experience the kind of celebrity Tebow has and still be able to stay genuine.

That is where I disagree. There is no proof the guy isn't being genuine. The spotlight is on him constantly and he doesn't make a misstep and for that he is disingenuous?
