Gainey is in a dreadful funk right now. I feel for the guy. Opponents know he has lost confidence and is alligator arming his shots. I really hope he can knock down a couple in Athens Saturday if he gets an opportunity. He just needs to see the ball go through the basket right now whether it’s a 3, a lay up, free throw. Im really hoping he doesn’t turn into a T. Key 2.0. Can you imagine the discussions him and his dad are having about this?

I'm wondering about the discussions He and Barnes are having......

Looks like the Rocky Top Flu has hit Gainey and he can't shoot now. The rest have been shooting here so long that there is no hope for improvement now. Gaaaaaaaahhhh, this gets us every year.

Happens everywhere, but it seems like it's something that plagues us more often. Maybe it's because we don't look at other teams as closely, but we've seen it with every Barnes team. Players come and go but this disappearing act is always biting us. I'm convinced that it's the effort we put into the defensive end. I think there will just be times where the team has some guys that just hit a wall at various times physically and mentally. I don't think it would be as big a problem if the game were still played from inside out, but today's game is perimeter oriented and when your legs go, your shot goes. It is what it is. Barnes won't change and I don't blame him. Defense will win you a lot of games and we're not ever on the bubble for the tournament. I really thought Barnes would use our depth to keep these guys fresh this year, but it appears that's just not how he wants to do this. He's going to ride his horses all the way. Unfortunately, history is an excellent teacher. I hate saying it, but our season will go pretty much according to script. Same ending in store for the Vols. Forget the destination an enjoy the journey. But...PLEASE be on for UGA. I'd love it if our shooters were all hitting in the same game and they run UGA off their home floor. I don't expect it, but I hope for it.

I’m wondering what Gainey does in practice relative to the other perimeter players that come off of the bench. I’d guess that Barnes isn’t discouraging him from passing up shots when he has good looks.
I also wonder if Barnes is handling it carefully because he's coach Gainey's son? Tough situation to be sure.

I don’t really believe the shooting woes are exhaustion from defensive efforts. Look at the last 2 games: 1-12 from three to start against Ole Miss and 2-13 to start against Mississippi State. Much better in the latter parts of both games. If that was the case, wouldn’t the shooting for other teams be correspondingly bad in the second half because of the pressure we apply? Wouldn’t the opponents percentages be worse in the 2nd half because of the cumulative wear and tear?
I don’t really know, though.

Makes pretty good sense to me, great post.

Feels like every time we had the momentum last night vescovi or jjj would miss a shot and hand it right back to miss state. Those guys have to show up if we’re going to win games.
Don't understand vescovi who dribbles around in circles under the basket when most of the time he is open for a shot but kicks it back out for somebody to launch a three. So sick of James looking like a freshman when he is a grown man.

the old cliche is "gotta play your way out of a slump"

Gainey is put in for instant offense. Jordan "Tyreke" Gainey.

Hopefully he plays his way out of this soon.

Vescovi and JJJ are going to be the difference between being a great team or just a good team. They have to score and in an efficient way. Not taking 15 shots to score 12 points. Gainey started out ok, but he has totally disappeared in SEC play. I doubt he would be holding any minutes if his dad were not a coach.

We got 2 alphas in the starting lineup. ZZ and Knecht. Not bashing JJJ and Vescovi, but they're super seniors. They are what they are at this point. Unfortunately, we have to depend on them. Doesn't bode well for a deep run in March. Stranger things have happened, but I wouldn't put money on this those 2.

Not making excuses, but I’m starting to think JJJ might have a hand/wrist injury. The device he was wearing yesterday is somewhat of an indicator, possibly.

I agree, our "Vets" have been underwhelming, specifically Vescovi. Out of all that the OP listed, I would prefer most of the minutes be given to Mashack for defensive purposes.
