Turkey is a member of Nato, meaning that it could invoke Article V of the North Atlantic Treaty and summon the aid of all 28 countries in the alliance if it comes under attack.

oh what fun

Article Six of the North Atlantic Treaty;

For the purpose of Article 5, an armed attack on one or more of the Parties is deemed to include an armed attack:

- on the territory of any of the Parties in Europe or North America, on the Algerian Departments of France (2), on the territory of or on the Islands under the jurisdiction of any of the Parties in the North Atlantic area north of the Tropic of Cancer;

- on the forces, vessels, or aircraft of any of the Parties, when in or over these territories or any other area in Europe in which occupation forces of any of the Parties were stationed on the date when the Treaty entered into force or the Mediterranean Sea or the North Atlantic area north of the Tropic of Cancer.

If Turkish jets violated Syrian airspace like some of the rumors are saying Turkey couldn't invoke Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty.

wouldn't supplying arms to the opposition forces already be seen as a violation then (even before the plane)? Not a big fan of Syria but when another country is acting as a staging ground for forces you have to pay attention to the threat

It would not surprise me if the Turks violated airspace.

It is going to be interesting to see how this plays out to say the least.

Me either. Anyways the story has been updated, it says the Turkish government is in emergency security meetings. It has also backed track on earlier reports saying Syria had already apologized for downing the jet.

@BBCWorld #Turkey‬ says when it knows full circumstances of Syria's downing of Turkish jet, Turkey will respond "decisively", reports BBC's @pakhead

CBS News is confirming it was shot down by Syrian air defenses. Also Turkish PM's office said it is understood that Syria did shoot it down.
