Franks to Arkansas

Great kid, many ups and downs on the field. Talent beyond description, probably the best practice QB I’ve ever laid eyes on. His deficiencies came with an occasional really bad decision in big moments.

But all in all, his production and development under Mullen far outweighed his bad moments and rough first few years under McElwain.

No question that he makes Arkansas a tougher out in 2020.

My question about Franks is this: You could see Franks on the sidelines being very emotional from time to time. I don’t mean leading the team emotional, but being a hot head and losing his cool. If he doesn’t handle winning well in Gainesville, how the hell is he going to handle playing for a team that is 1-23 the last 3 seasons in the SEC?

Fair questions... Here’s part of the confusion on Franks. His first two years, he showed absolutely zero emotion. He was a statue, never excited either way. Remember early in Mullen’s tenure when he could NOT get Franks to loosen up and have a little fun? There was that shot of Mullen even doing a little dance step with Franks on the sideline all aimed at getting Franks to laugh a little, relax, etc. Well, Franks got blasted by many Gator fans for this lack of emotion, some national media picked up on that and he was criticized for it. Well eventually, Franks starts playing better, having some success, and starts having behaving a little more demonstrably on the field, and again, he’s then unmercifully criticized for his “antics.” Some of that came across as “forced swag” and he again got blasted.

So Franks never really could find that happy medium between having fun and playing loose, versus coming across as a guy who is trying too hard to come across as having that Baker Mayfield/Joe Burrow swag.

In other words, he never really found his true identity. Regarding how he’ll handle Arkansas, that remains to be seen and I can’t predict it. He’ll be one-and-done, I’m hoping he does well and gets a shot in the NFL. God knows his physical tools are off the charts.

I think that's because he simply isn't very good. It's kind of hard to find your "true identity" when you light it up in practice, and in spots in games, but balance that against "What the hell was he thinking?" type plays.
