Fred Thompson drops out of GOP race

I dunno, with McCain, I get the feeling he will go with what he knows.

I think Huck would be too much of a stretch.

I think Huck would be a good VP for Romney.

Is it out of the question the Lieberman is further courted by McCain as a potential choice? The party probably wouldn't be too happy with that, either, but aren't they decent friends? He is younger...and an independent now (whatever that means).

I felt that might be the case too, but S. Carolina really surprised me. McCain has only recently made me displeased with his stances...before that, I liked him a lot.

Look how many actual conservatives voted for him then compare how many Independents did. I don't trust states where anyone can vote in the parties primaries. He doesn't even lead in delegates right now. Trust me after Super Tuesday, this will all be different.

Romney will get the nomination............

It will be a Romney and Huck ticket.

I think conservatives will vote for Mitt simply because of a lack of options. At this point whoever wins will win because they are the least of a RINO out of all the others.

No argument there............

In short, Romney has the money to get his message out.

No baiting at all, the mormons are a special bunch, throughout their history they have been cold blooded killers who made Utah a theocracy.

Romney will be attacked for it but Huck will balance every thing out being a baptist minister.

Well..in addition to that, then :), he is a world class sleaze ball outside of his religion and strikes me as someone you would want to wash after a conversation with.

This thread has actually opened up my eyes! I now know why we would never vote for an atheist in this country....we would have no religious groups to put them in to form our opinions and understand how they must think!

My wife would not like you two. Romney has been her favorite all along.

I lived with Romney here in MA...he has no problem adjusting his view to fit whatever situation he is in. The boldness with which he does it is a testament to his sleaziness.

All politicians are sleaze bags. But at least Mitt has been in the private sector and made his own way, before putting his hands into others pockets. He also knows the world market better than anyone else. Anyone of these candidates need Fred's backing. He's the only true conservative in the bunch. McCain, and Thompson maybe friends, but their ideology couldn't be farther apart, except on the military. And until Fla. we want know how big a player Giuliani is. Thompson is going to be on everyone's short list. But Mitt has the money and the message, if he pulled Fred's indorsement, IMO, would pull the conservatives together.

At this point, the best possible outcome from my vantage point would be a Romney-Thompson ticket. Fred was my favored candidate, but with him out I have to go with Romney. I'm sure he's a sleazebag, but he's a free-market as opposed to socialist sleazebag. Maybe Thompson could keep him steering the ship to the right as opposed to the left.

And if Huckabee gets on any ticket, I will simply not vote. The only thing I dislike more than sanctimonious Southern Baptist clergymen are populist, left-wing sanctimonious Southern Baptist clergymen.

McCain is showing well in the closed primary in Florida. Did the "Fred-head" conservatives turn to McCain? There were questions about whether McCain could win an economy-dominated race when the election was closed to independents/democrats. However, he is holding his own right now with a lead (but a small one - about 20,000 votes with 33% reporting).

A surprising exit poll result to me was those who said the economy was their top issue voted for McCain 38% to 32% over Romney.

Can McCain pull this off .... and if he does - does he take this momentum into super Tuesday to steal the nomination?

Is the showing in the closed primary in Florida better than you thought you would see - or do you think that the republicans in Florida tend a bit more liberal/moderate?

What are the super Tuesday states with closed primaries but large right-wing conservative republican populations?
