Freshman Julian Phillips is a “Dream”

Don't know if people watch/listen to the Vol Basketball Fever podcast, but I do sometimes and the most recent episode had that Ryan kid from RTI on. Said that one of the biggest things that stood out to him about Phillips was that during practice, Barnes only got onto him ONCE on Tuesday, which is almost unheard of for a freshman under Barnes during practice

Love to hear it! Do you know if Phillips will start at the first of the year? Im assuming whether he starts or not, he will get close to starter minutes or am I wrong?
Barnes isn’t huge on who starts, a lot of times it’s not who plays most minutes as you alluded to in your post. Phillips may not start, don’t think it’s even close to being decided, but he will play starter minutes imo.

Speaking of Phillips, to us he looks like the most gifted of all the freshman five-stars that Barnes has landed in his time here. That’s because of a few things. He’s a gifted athlete. He’s a legit 6-foot-8 with a ‘plus’ wing span. He’s pretty polished offensively for a freshman and he brings the mental approach to playing defense that is rare for a first year player.

Most NBA mocks just mock kids based on their HS rankings with the foreign eligible kids sprinkled in. Also at this time in the year, both Springer and Keon were mocked higher than I’ve seen Phillips listed so far. So projecting him at this point as a better pro prospect based on his NBA draft projection doesn’t exactly add up for you.

Back to your original post and my original question to you that you’ve totally danced around: what is the hype? Just that he is one and done? And if he comes back it will be an indictment on a bad season? That’s just not true at all.
Yes it is. If he’s back it’s due to a bad injury or a subpar season. It’s not that deep.

This... idk why he doesn't understand this.

Here are our top 5 highest rated players since 2000 according to 247...

1. Tobias .9978
2. Hopson .9978
3. Chandler .9966
4. Julian Phillips .9947
5. Jaden Springer .9946

3 of these players were one and done players and then the other was Hopson who had a subpar freshman year and didn't really live up to the hype.

He is. That’s why he’s back at Kentucky this season rather than putting his name in the draft.

Could be he wanted to move up into the big money after a second solid year. Guess Peyton had a different plan too. Just getting drafted is not everybody's goal.

Actually he's likely to get better money this year at Kentucky than he would have in the NBA. He wasn't projected as a draft pick, so he likely would have ended up with a two way contract, fighting for a reserve roster spot. He's not like Peyton, who was a consensus #1 pick who could choose to turn down the chance of being drafted by a bad organization.

NBAdraft.net late had him.......

However, in the latest update from ESPN, Tshiebwe is rising up the charts as he is now projected to be the 43rd-overall pick going to the Charlotte Hornets.

43rd isn't guaranteed money. Moussa Diabaté was pick #43 this year and is on a two-way contract with Orlando. Whatever Tshiebwe is gaining from draft placement this year, the NIL pay he's getting this year is more meaningful long term.

Phillips is 19th (tied) in the country at getting to the line……tops among all freshmen.

Although he isn’t in the top 350 (at least) in minutes played per, and at least 17 freshmen play more minutes (probably a lot more - at 350 you at 30.?? Minutes per - Julian is only at 26.4)

He is fantastic at getting to the line. He gets a free shot about ever 3.9 minutes played. Compare that to Zach Edey one of the best at getting to the line also one free shot every 3.9 minutes played (junior).

Phillips has been great. He is raw and is still building strength, but notice what DOESN'T happen when he drives: turnovers or charges. He puts a ton of stress on the defense. His rebounding is amazing for a freshman wing & defense is already really good. I think he will start figuring out how to finish with contact. His jump shot is ahead of where I expected.

It is nice that the Vols play a big boy schedule prior to the SEC. Phillips is matching up well. Wow - Louisville is winless this season. How long will they put up with that? Hatfield got bad advice but I don't think his work ethic could mesh with Rick - I bet he transfers again in a year or so. Just a nomad - headed for a lower level European team or China. It would be nice to see 2 years out of Phillips and see how he improves.

There's already one thread about a transfer who is no longer remotely relevant to this program. Please don't start another.
