Freshman Quarterbacks

For those who think fresmans can't play qb, or not ready, TexasA&M qb Reed from nashville Tn. is lighting it up against Okl. State.
I wouldnt say zero TD's and a pick is "lighting up a defense" that was probably in a bend but dont break mode. Yards mean nothing without the TD going with it. That just shows the defense is probably playing a tampa 2, and when the field gets shorter, the windows get smaller, and completions get harder.

Now 6 TD's with the same # of attempts IS lighting up a defense. Moss is a sophomore.

Should have had 30 points, fumble on 1 yd line. And yes, 4th string qb with no practice to speak of with the 1's is outstanding. And it was Reed.

I didn't see the whole game but I thought Reed looked good.

We’ll see what we have in Nico soon enough. The entire bowl game will just be a preview of next year. Going up against a good defense like Iowa should give us a good read.

To put it into perspective Tennessee has started a freshman QB 3 times in bowl games and only won one of those 3. The other freshman to start were Manning, Bray and Clausen and each saw extensive playing time during the regular season so expectations need to be tempered for what Nico can accomplish with the limited action he has saw.

Freshman QBs are like tequila shots and hairdressers named Tiffany. They’re fun for awhile but can end in disaster if not managed properly.
Interested to know how to manage Tiffany properly. Is there an ebook on that?

Ok St gave up 441 yards per game. Almost 100 yards more per game than us for perspective.

You are talking about a freshman that spent the entire season with A&M before making a start against an OK St defense that ranked 90th overall. That is not the same as starting a freshman after 2 months of college ball and throwing him up against SEC defenses ranked inside the top 40.

Also, 2 very highly touted freshman QBs took significant starting QB reps this year in Jaden Rashada and Dante Moore. Neither one looked very good.

It's a little different starting in a meaningless bowl game than it is teeing it up as a true frosh against a full SEC schedule.

I am in total agreement with this. I am just saying Reed did an outstanding job, considering, no playing time before the bowl game, and was not the starter. He came in the 1st series of play because the starter got hurt, which means he didnt practice with the one's in preparation for the game.

No joke, and the kid had no idea he was playing last night. Bad mojo for the QB Starter for A&M, breaking his arm on the second play of the game!!!! Sheesh. Next year looking better in Aggieland with Reed.

You don't understand, Reed did not start, came in after starter broke his arm the 2nd play of the game, He wasnt prepared to start, and that is why I saying he did a great job.

He did do a good job. But when talking about freshman QBs, they rarely succeed. And it's even more rare that they succeed early in the season. So when people talk about freshman not being able to play year 1, that's what they mean.

Reed has had 4+ months of preparation and doing this day in and day out. Credit to him for playing well, but this isn't the norm.

With EE allowing players the ability of being around the previous year’s bowl prep, spring practice, and working out all summer, along with this season’s practice, Freshmen are more like sophomores used to be. Still tuff but basically a whole year under their belt.
On another topic, did I hear Moore is coming back next year to be the backup to Nico?
