I don't know if Clawson was forced on Fulmer or not. I know he was doing very well as head coach at Richmond before he joined the Vols.
IMO Clausen is a good coach but Fulmer brought him in and UT had not recruited the type of players he needed to run his O. Then there was rumors that Fulmer had lost confidence in a new O and the whole culture that was not good anyway went down hill. Remember there was a made up award around the SEC, as the Fulmer award at one time, for team with most violations.

Hard for me to give him a good….once a backstabber always a backstabber…

Another year has passed. Has anyone’s reflections changed their thoughts on his legacy?

Have to admit, the winning under CJH has made me think less and less of Fulmer.

Fulmer looked rather smug on the video screen at the Alabama basketball game Saturday afternoon, Josh Dobbs was in the house, Coach Heupel mimicked smoking a cigar with a couple of minutes left, both got a whoop and a holler, Dickie V got a standing O, in my opinion, Fulmer couldn't turn a dollar anywhere but at Tennessee and he was always at the university trough bringing nothing to the table other that the initial BCS trophy and a couple of SEC championships in 1997 and 1998, looking at what happens when you put businessmen in charge of the business rather than a past prime coach, whistle and a hat, all programs are extremely competitive and borderline elite (baseball is closest) and all Fulmer did (twice) was waste away university time, assets and opportunities time and time again. Why they ever sell him a seat to a basketball or a baseball game is beyond me. Those who live in the past are condemned to stay there.

Fulmer was a very good coach until the year 2005. He got complacent then. If any coach at UT had Fulmer’s record from 2005-2008, they would have been fired. Butch Jones’s record at UT from 2014-2017 was almost identical to Fulmer’s final 4 years. You can brag about the 2007 trip to the SEC championship game if you want, but we lost to Bama and Florida by a combined total of more than 60 points that season. That’s terrible.

When Cutcliffe left in 2007, Fulmer was exposed. He used to be great, but not anymore. The game had passed him. He was done, and the fact that no other team even offered him a job after 2008 was really telling. It was the right decision to let him go. The coaches UT brought in the next 4 times were terrible decisions.

Your post made me think of a fun off-season thread we had a few years ago.
Mods! Can you send his IP to the authorities for a wellness check?

I respect what Fulmer did in the 90s but I've never personally cared for him. He did Majors dirty.
