Hey guys, I am just looking for a little information. Please educate a dawg fan on this topic. When Johnny Majors was released for Fulmer was he in the same type of season that you guys are going through now? I dont remember hearing of all the same off the field problems then but I then again thie information age had not started so I am not sure? Could someone please explain why Majors was released so quickly but not Fulmer? If we are now able to be Ffulmer I am all for keeping him, but I understand how you guys feel. I just have to relate back to Ray Goff. A great recruiter but definantly not a coach.

Thanks

That topic is like an old scab, if you pick it it just gets infected, that was a different era with different circumstances.... it's also like a rerun of a Jerry Springer show all the cooks show up to throw chairs everytime.

DAWG, no offense but this may be the most beaten to death horse in the history of Vol sports.

Majors' situation bore almost no resemblance to Fulmer's. Majors won 9 games the year before he parted ways with Tennessee. He just managed to get in bad graces with the AD and the money men.

Or to relate to a Dawg fan....it's kinda like knowing Vince Dooley keeps hiring losers to ensure no one ever surpasses his greatness as a coach at UGA then finally breaking down with Michael Adams holds his feet to the fire.

To quote a character from the movie Platoon: "It's politics man!"

You absolutely remember incorrectly.

We were 0-6 to start the 1988 season. Majors did not leave until after the 1992 season. He sat out the first 2 games due to heart problems and then came back abruptly (most people agree too early). The team was fractured as they lost the next 3 in a row and Majors resigned between the end of the regular season and the bowl game.

Actually, Fulmer was 4-0 in 1992 and Majors was 5-3 in the games he coached. The next year we went 9-2-1 but I think the tie game with Alabama was forfeited due to NCAA penalties.

1988 Johnny Majors 5 6 0
1989 Johnny Majors 10 1 0

Here is you some hope for next year as long as the one loss is to Ga......dont take it personal but I am hoping for the end of Fulmer because it always seems he is in the middle of all SEC controversy rather it is his fault or not and it always seems to make national news.

Majors beleive it or now made the vols in better shape when left from the time he took the job in 1977. Fulmer has taken the Bill battle route. He took over a Majors sqaud full of talent and gradually let it slide. Same with Battle. He took over Dickey and won with his talent and went on the down hill slide.
Like it or not there is a striking pattern of resembalce the two coaches have gone.

Yeah, Fulmer took over all that talent and let it slide downhill right into a National Championship 6 years later.

I do believe that the 1998 national title team was all Fulmer's players, except for a few redshirted freshman. Its 13 years after Fulmer took over and we went 10-2 last year, almost got a title in 01, thats hardly still running on Majors talent.
