When I was enrolled at UT, engineering classes and tests were being adapted for users of Texas Instruments hand held engineering calculators. There was no way anyone with just a slide rule would finish a test on time. These calculators cost $400, 2 months average salary at the time.

Beat me to it.....I was going to ask why anyone should be sportin' a Canon cheapo when a TI product was the only way to go. Back in the day, feeding your pet velociraptor wasn't cheap either!
 
Yep those were the days. Start out feeding cards to the Fortran compiler and do your last work on a calculator. I got out in '81 and one guy in my class had a home computer. The rest of us got along with HP's.
