Biggest thing he has going for him? Charisma. Look at the coaches that grab headlines like Miles, Gundy, Gruden, Saban, etc. They have charisma. Something Dooley and Kiffin did NOT have. Coaching battles are not only won on the field which he's proven already. They are won in the living rooms of recruits, in press conferences, in call in shows and most importantly in the locker room. Players will follow a coach they believe in and will give their all if they have that drive.
Do I think he can instill a drive in our players both in the locker room and on the field? Do I think he can walk into living rooms of recruits and get them fired up over running through the T at Neyland? Do I think he can handle the media? Absolutely on all counts. Next year will be interesting to say the least with a new coach, new staff and a new strategy. But I think we'll do pretty good all things considered.
Overall, I think it's a bit early to be talking of "legend" or "Dooley 2.0." But I think we're already seeing a marked improvement over what Dooley had to offer.
