Future of Florida

We had Cornbread coaching

As a dead man walking. And of course, it was unusually warm. And Florida had Mullen’s best team, so they’d have won that game played anywhere. But over the long haul, playing that game in November would lead to more Tennessee wins than playing it in September.

I think it's been shown that Florida isn't the job everyone thinks it is. I know, I know, "all that instate talent!" But instate talent is an overrated factor. They have to share that talent with a lot of other programs. And a lot of programs have more to sell...better facilities, better fans, perhaps better NIL deals.

Think about it, the only two Florida coaches who've had success are Spurrier and Meyer...two of the greatest coaches who ever lived. Muschamp was supposed to be a great hire. He flopped. Mullen took Mississippi State to a #1 ranking. If he doesn't succeed there, that's a pretty strong indictment.

That said, the best thing for Tennessee would be someone who does just well enough to hang around, but not get fired. Someone like Mullen. Although I'm not sure who the hot names on their board would be if they were to fire him. Fickell, perhaps?

The Florida job is slightly overrated. But it's on par with Tennessee and Alabama. You do have to be able to recruit at all 3 schools, it's not like LSU, Georgia, and USC where talent just falls into your lap. That said, I still think Florida is probably slightly ahead of UT and Bama, just due to the in-state talent. But you do have to have a coach that will go out and get that talent; it's not just going to come to you.

That said, I think Mullen is probably being very underestimated right now. This is pretty much the low-point of his entire career. He was in the playoff discussion last year.

And I don't think Emory Jones is that good of a QB. He'd be better of switching to Richardson. Truth be told, Richardson probably isn't "ready" yet, but he's going to give Mullen a much better shot at winning over the long-term.

Florida fans have gone from plotting out how to get another shot at Alabama in the SEC championship game and a playoff birth to wondering whether we will be bowl eligible.

And debating whether we are better off not making a bowl. We've got five wins with one more cupcake coming up. But at Missouri? Meh, not likely a W. And then FSU, which based on how things are going may beat us easily.

Future? Very little competition in-state and a horde of talented in-state players. They'll be fine.

Are you really saying the UT job is “on par” with the UA and UF jobs? Really? Right now UT is “on par” with UK and Mizzou.

Florida DC Grantham out. OL coach Hevesy also out. On a scale of 1-10, I’m 0 surprised that Grantham is out. I’m about a 7 or so with Hevesy. UF’s OL was the least of their problems.

One thing about Florida, they don’t screw around when it comes to firing coaches. A month at UF is a year at most other places.

If Mullen loses to Mizzou and/or FSU he’s probably also gone.

I think the gun was put to Mullen’s head on these two with assurances that there was plenty of ammunition left if he didn’t like it

Apt description.

Thing is, it was clear that the players had given up during that game. Particularly on defense. They knew. And they had no shame.

Mullen has better jump on that problem right now or this will get very ugly.

I can't recall a team or a coach who fell further, faster, for anything non criminal.

After the apparent adjustments by our defense in the second half of Alabama game and the sense that things were going in the right direction Gator fans were singing his praises ... just a complete collapse.

I wonder if something has happened "under the hood". I agree, this seemingly came out of nowhere. Pass along any swampgas scuttlebutt. :D

I haven't seen anything "under the hood," as you call it. I think we fans were just a combo of misled by what appeared to be a major turnaround in the Alabama game (but was just them maybe not being as good as we thought) plus wishful thinking on our part that the defense would not be the liability this year as it was last year.

Wrong on both counts.

You gotta realize the game in Knoxville next fall has gotten interesting. I remember a six (or was it seven) game win streak against some mediocre Alabama teams starting in ‘95. There was a lot of pent up frustration that brings out the ravenous fans, even when the game isn’t that good and when you are not the underdog.

Tennessee still has a long way to go though. It’s easy to get overhyped. Seriously watching Kentucky vs MSU, I figured we’d win by 2 TD’s. It’s easy to drink that koolaid. Florida is never easy for some reason.

Agree. Get this, Mullen started 29-6 at UF, and was on a 12-1 run before the LSU shoe-throw game last year. Since then, 4-8. Hard to fathom.

He made the staff firings to satisfy most gator fans. They will win out and things will look better. I think many are premature in calling this stretch the demise of Dan Mullen. If, however, Richardson leaves, the seat gets hotter.

If he hasn’t left by now he’s not going to.

Samford is the only guaranteed win left on our schedule.

FSU smells blood in the water.

Program wise yes. Not talent wise. UT is always going to be one of the top 10-15 programs in the country

Missouri is an L. FSU probably ought to be favored since the team is in such disarray. And Mulken is the last guy I think can pull it back together. Could be a mass exodus to the transfer portal coming out of Gainesville.
