We desperately need Joe Milton to have success this year for the future health of our QB room. We need him to be THE example of why it is beneficial for a recruit to come here and sit on the bench until it’s their turn. If Nico has to take over during the season for anything other than (God forbid) an injury, then that’s not a good thing for the long term health of the QB room.

In this era of football, QB’s are not waiting patiently for their turn and are transferring when not playing immediately. We need Joe Milton III to be the reason why it pays to wait your turn to play for Coach Heupel, not just for success, but for depth and reliability in the QB room.

If Milton has a good year, he will play his way into the first round of the draft. Nico will be the next QB who has first round talent. Which should drive QB talent here as a top 3 destination for QBs.

What I really want is for Wright to go in the first round and for Carvin to get drafted which will help us start getting elite OL talent to go along with the elite QBs.

It's a good point, but I wouldn't use the term "desperately." Heupel has had as much success as anyone in America at developing highly productive college QBs (who had success after waiting their turns). If that weren't the case, we might be desperate for Milton to succeed. As it stands, Milton's success would be another in a long line of successful QBs.

You can restate this sentence thusly - all programs need a Joe Milton to show why it pays to stay the course and play for coach XXXX.

It can definitely be said about any program, but we obviously care about the Vols here. The thing we have going for us is the reputation Heupel has built for himself as a QB coach. We can't afford to have anything happen that damages that rep.

There aren't many programs who cycle in QBs who are willing to be patient because of the track record of a coach. We have a chance to be one of the few, but a lot hinges on Milton's performance next season. I think this is the point OP is trying to emphasize.

I have my doubts that one player would damage his reputation.

Amen, but I look at a situation like last year where two of our scholarship QBs suffered season ending injuries. As of right now, we only have two, right? We need a full QB room, not just for depth in game day, but we need quality QBs who can give our defense a good look on scout offense.

You may be right, but I'd rather not chance it. Despite his well-deserved reputation as a QB guru, I haven't heard anyone talking dynasty just yet. Heupel has had exactly ONE Top-10 finish in-a-row coaching a Heisman-candidate QB at a Power 5 program. Our position in the recruiting battle for the next Nico will be much stronger if he can make it two in-a-row.

Though I hate Clemson, JH has set up the QB room for a long run at major success similar to Clemson.

Taj Boyd = Hendon Hooker Launched the programs, Joe Milton maybe = Deshaun Watson, Nico = Trevor Lawrence.

You cannot win in college anymore at the highest level without an elite QB!

I mean, yeah, but that wasn’t the topic. You’re talking about depth in case of injury. The OP was talking about Milton having a great year.

No one should be talking dynasty. Heck thinking it is also misplaced. Tennessee has always been able to recruit. We got Nico without having a perfect setup in the QB room. There is only upside if Milton has a good year. There is zero downside for the program. We as fans will be disappointed, but zero program downside.

Let's hope not. Best thing for everyone is Joe plays well and Nico doesn't get thrown into the fire his FR year. Then his SO year he takes over.

I agree 100% but that’s just the feeing I have about the upcoming season. Hopefully Joe plays great and Nico can just get some experience along the way

Re dynasty, my point is that fans of programs like Bama or UGA have every reason to feel the kind of confidence you are displaying. They have proven over a period of several years will always get great players at all positions (including QB). But we're not at that level yet.

I feel like we still have something to prove to prospective recruits who may be choosing between Tennessee and those other programs.

Thing is, with the ability to go grab a good qb from the portal when you need one - like Joe Burrow, or Hendon Hooker, etc- having a deep bench not only isn’t happening, it’s not as necessary as we may think…..

They could offer the kid UF ran off because he sang a song with the N word in it...Would make a good backup for Nico.

Question: wouldn’t it make the most sense now to wait till after the spring ball games so in some starting battle we could snag a guy who’s solid who just couldn’t win his spot?
seems likely a few could be out there then?
