Future of the QB Room

No one should be talking dynasty. Heck thinking it is also misplaced. Tennessee has always been able to recruit. We got Nico without having a perfect setup in the QB room. There is only upside if Milton has a good year. There is zero downside for the program. We as fans will be disappointed, but zero program downside.
Just wait a few years when the Dynasty happens and someone comes back to bump this thread for some e-chest thumping.

...but he transferred in, so how is he the example? SMH

Honestly, who would have wanted him after lackluster performances at Michigan and at the beginning of the 2021 season? Transferring out of UT after HH took over would have been a downgrade to a smaller program.

I would also argue that his age is important. He's about to be 23, eventually your options run out and you got to grow up. Jalen hurts is 25 and is in the Super Bowl.

I agree completely. I think it will happen though. My thought on it is Nico will be too good to not be on the field.
It's not going to happen.

Clemson was maybe the second best defense we played all year and Joe had 3 TD's and 251 yards before the last two drives where we just ran the ball to run the clock out.

If he did that to Clemson, what is he going to do to UVA, Austin Peay, FL, UT San Antonio, USCjr and A&M with an entire offseason, spring camp and fall camp with all the same weapons plus Castles (better receiving TE than Fant or Warren) and freakish Donte Thornton?

Oh and the defense will be improved.

The odds are stacked heavily against you.

You don't know if it will or won't happen anymore than I do.
I'm not wanting it to happen. The best case scenario is that Milton continues to improve and plays at a high level and we have a 10+ win season.
Just saying my guess is that Nico will be taking over at some point next year.

I want him to play his way into the first round of next year’s draft. To me he has better upside than anything Anthony Richardson has shown.

There is no future that has three game ready qb's on one roster. The transfer portal ended that. If you're not in the two deep at any position the portal will be very likely be calling your name.

There is precedent at Tennessee for a qb finishing the bowl game with 3 TD passes and having the apparent inside track to be the starter next year, only to be benched for the hot-shot kid. We were bringing back some nice weapons on offense, and the defense that next year was expected to be improved as well. Eerily similar.

I presume you are talking about 2005. Man, what a nightmare that season was! I definitely don’t want to experience that again. I do have faith that the combo of Milton/Nico/Heupel will be better than R Clausen/Ainge/Sanders.

I really thought Ainge would never recover from that LSU end zone crash & fail. Props to him from overcoming that fiasco. R Clausen did the improbable that game 2nd half great comeback @ LSU too.

Nico will take over by mid season.

Sigh...you cant help yourself can you?

I feel as bad for all you folks who have hated on Milton as i did for the Harrison Bailey fanboys(and girls.) Your opinions and predictions are so strong and likely just as wrong you won't be able to enjoy a good season with your new found villain out there.

If CJH can take a guy who couldn't keep the job a Va Tech (not exactly talent rich like UM) and make many believe he was a Heisman candidate then there is little doubt he can take Milton who has more raw talent that HH and do the same. This should be easy for all to see but as humans we like to be consistent so once we make these predictions (loudly make them) then we are apt to dig our heels in and insist we were correct all along.

I hope JM does fantastic because that would mean this team is more than likely kicking ass. But the entertainment value of watching some posters either disappear (until he throws an interception) or try to insist how much more we would be winning by if only someone else were the qb is going to be at a premium content level.

Yeps. I really thought Clausen earned the job. At least to start the year. But the potential of EA won the day.

Clausen earned the start. My recollection is that his lack of arm strength limited the offense. Plus the playbook/play calling was starting to go stale in my opinion.

One thing we know. Lack of arm strength isn’t Milton’s problem. My biggest fear is that he goes down with injury early in the season. Nico needs some time to adjust to the SEC level.

Lol. I’m not hoping JM doesn’t do well. I hope he does and have said so in other posts in this thread. I’m not sold that JM will consistently perform at a high level and get us to 10-11 wins but I hope he does. I just get the feeling that Nico will be playing at some point next season and I don’t think he will stay on the bench.
Don’t get too worked up about it. It’s a message board where people state their opinions. It’s ok for other people to have different opinions than yours. It’s going to be ok

Listening to the VQ podcast, they brought up JT Shrout as a possibility. Would’ve laughed a week ago, but imagine his skillset under Heupel as a backup. Heard worse scenarios…and recently!

I agree. If Peyton was third string as a frosh there’s no way Nico is SO much better as a frosh to overtake an established strong armed QB that already knows the system.

We desperately need Joe Milton to have success this year for the future health of our QB room. We need him to be THE example of why it is beneficial for a recruit to come here and sit on the bench until it’s their turn. If Nico has to take over during the season for anything other than (God forbid) an injury, then that’s not a good thing for the long term health of the QB room.

In this era of football, QB’s are not waiting patiently for their turn and are transferring when not playing immediately. We need Joe Milton III to be the reason why it pays to wait your turn to play for Coach Heupel, not just for success, but for depth and reliability in the QB room.
I don’t know. Probably just need the biggest NIL deal to keep a guy waiting. The next Nico isn’t turning down our millions to go play somewhere else for less money. Just keep paying them and they will come and wait.

Though I hate Clemson, JH has set up the QB room for a long run at major success similar to Clemson.

Taj Boyd = Hendon Hooker Launched the programs, Joe Milton maybe = Deshaun Watson, Nico = Trevor Lawrence.

You cannot win in college anymore at the highest level without an elite QB!

Agreed, but the question may well be "Who is the Vols' Cade Klubnik"?

You know, your reply gets straight to the heart and is probably the most accurate. Hats off, sir.
