Future of Vols QB position?

We are still calling the guy Payton...smh

I believe Arch Manning is 2023 and Kaden Martin is 2022
Sorry bout the "Pay" most folks around my neck of the woods with this handle spell it with an "a", force of habit for me. I'll try to do better. Now, as to the "2023 and 2022 statement, I'm at a loss, ( dense and/or uninformed) give me a better explanation. BUT as to my speculation on the "Manning" connections to programs and Cut, I say family tradition runs deep in many families. I think it will with the Manning family.

I just can't see the #1 player in the country going to Duke to play football. I bet they are in his top 5 though because I'd agree about Cutcliffe. We should have brought him back in when Kiffin bolted.

I think we might have except for his health. Wasn't he "under the weather about that time? As for being the no. 1 going to Duke, you are probably right. But Eli surly didn't go to Ole Miss looking at playing for No. 1. It was Cut and that "family thing" I spoke of in an earlier post. As I say you are likely right as to his not going to Duke, however it would not surprise me if he did.

He had ticker issues that prevented him from coaching at Notre Dame. Was stabilized and a nonissue when he returned to the Vols and same same for 12 seasons in Durham. Health wasn’t an issue when he was a candidate for the opening. Hiring control of his own staff was the deal killer.

Right! I remember the problem with staff hiring. I also read and heard (heard bad I know, likely should use heard it rumored) that his health was still a factor as it would relate to the stress of the UT job and expectations.

What's everyone's thought on Coach Pruitt's future plans at the QB position. With future prospects like Tee's son, Peyton's newphew and the Simpson kid in Jackson likely being Vol prospects who all do we go after now considering how talented our QB room seems to be for the next 4 seasons?
The very best you can sign in every class. Someone will transfer. Someone will sign. Someone... will emerge. That someone will have beaten out other great talents. They will have proven they can rise above the pressure. They will have top tier skill sets without the weaknesses of others who have been or are beneficiaries of a lack of real competition.

Only problem is Bailey is class of 2020.
Salter is 2021
I believe Simpson and Martin are both 2022.
Manning is 2023.
Personally I’m not buying Martin just yet. Hope he turns into the QB his father and like that he plays baseball (I.e. Kyler Murray or Pat Mahomes), but I feel like he’s got a ways to go
None of those guys has proven anything yet. There is no guarantee that Bailey will ever start for UT. Salter may prove he's better from the moment he steps on campus. At a minimum he's much more mobile.

There's no guarantee that Salter will ever start. Maurer or Shrout could win and solidify the job meaning the next true competition involves the '22 and '23 signees.

The GREAT thing about this "problem"... is that UT isn't getting a QB starter by default. Pruitt has no intentions of seeing guys "wait their turn". All of UT's QBs understand that Pruitt will try to recruit over them. If they want to be the starter then they better use every advantage they can find to win the job... and keep it.

When you have that kind of competition (like all the top tier programs have)... your starter is confident and can handle game pressure. He's used to every play being do or die... He's made precision plays under pressure to win the job... so he can make them to win a game.

Honestly, UT hasn't had this in my lifetime or at least not to this degree. I'm anxious to see if Pruitt can really replicate what Bama, USCw, tOSU, and perhaps a few other apex programs have done specifically with signing a great QB every year. If so... a WHOLE lot of other things fall into place.

I grew up a Duke fan, I’ve gone to plenty of games there. There is no way Arch is picking Duke after growing up in THE First Family of the SEC. Even Cut doesn’t have that much pull.
Choosing to play at Duke instead of an SEC school would be like choosing to play single A minor league ball on a random Tuesday night for 4 years instead of playing Game 7 in Fenway for Sox vs Yankees for 3 or 4 years.
