On my way to work this morning, they mentioned the "outage" affecting Comcast customers. I was able to open facebook and my email was fine. It was just VN I had trouble with. Weird.

I think it was a webhost that hosts a ton of websites. I believe that was LiquidWeb.

There is an ongoing issue with internet connectivity in the area where the datacenter is located. Four of the Tier1 Internet Service Providers in the area are experiencing connectivity issues ranging from moderate to major outages. The following providers are all experiencing outages -- look at the Lake Michigan/Central Michigan area in the DownDetector maps:

- Comcast - Comcast outage or service down? Current problems and outages | Down Detector
- Time Warner Cable - Time Warner outage or service down? Current outages and problems | Down Detector
- AT&T (but not wireless) - AT&T outage or service down? Current problems and outages | Down Detector
- Verizon Wireless (but not FiOS/DSL) - Verizon Wireless outage or service down? Current problems and outages | Down Detector
- Level 3 - Level3 outage? Current problems and outages | Down Detector

Allstream has confirmed that there was a fiber cut yesterday evening between Chicago and Montreal. A severe storm also went through Central Michigan overnight which dropped record rainfall on Detroit. This may well be a primary cause of the outage for some of the Internet Providers listed above.

I couldn't get on from Comcast at home so I rushed in early to work to log in. Asked the admin to hold all calls, that I have to catch up on some work.

If you're an I.T. professional (or just a tech-savvy computer geek), this is an interesting read. I'm a Computer Network Engineer, so this is right up my alley.

Internet hiccups today? You're not alone. Here's why

This is one of my areas of expertise. 512k routes is "The Internet" and knowing what I do about Cisco I addressed this with our primary mpls provider when it hit 509k. We knew BGP was going to kill some devices soon. I don't understand why so many providers ignored it.
