Jeremias Heard focused on basketball during his freshman and sophomore years of high school. But Jeff Hunnicutt, the football coach at Model High School in Rome, Ga., repeatedly told Heard to keep his options open in hopes of convincing him to go back to playing football, a sport he had played in eighth grade. Heard had a combination of size and athleticism that could make him a difference-maker on the football field, and Hunnicutt believed it could open some doors for him at the next level.
...Hunnicutt said Tennessee is getting a “very raw” player with a high ceiling in the 6-foot-7, 295-pound Heard. “I’ve known Jeremias since he was an eighth-grader who was coming up from the middle school...Been in his ear about trying to keep his avenues open, and he finally came out (for football) this past year. Took some time to get readjusted, as far as the base fundamentals go. Obviously, his size is a huge quality. He works his butt off in the weight room, as well. He’s a longer kid, and he’s approaching three plates in bench and power clean — which, that’s pretty good for a tall, long kid like this. …
“He does some things extremely well. There’s a lot of growth that’s going to be made, hopefully over the summer. And it’s hard to coach that intangible of being that size. With that measurable, it sticks out. And, of course, when he walks in the doorway, he fills up the doorway. It’s unique. And he moves extremely well for that size.”
...Heard recorded 29 tackles, eight tackles for loss and five sacks during his junior season, along with two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and three blocked kicks. On offense, he caught seven passes for 94 yards and a touchdown.
