-CallahanEkeler joined Vols defensive line coach Rodney Garner in visiting Class of 2022 edge rusher Darren Agu, a Vanderbilt commitment from Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School in Rabun Gap, Ga. Agu, who previously was committed to Notre Dame, picked up a Tennessee offer in March and has stayed in contact with the Vols recently, and he’s now scheduled to take an official visit to Knoxville this weekend.
- VQ3-Star edge/LB who is currently committed to Vanderbilt. He was previously committed to Notre Dame, so there's the Clark Lea connection.
He will OV Tennessee this weekend. He's got two OV coming up next week as well, one to Vanderbilt and one to Ga Tech. So it's a three team race with Tennessee/Vandy at the top, in my opinion.
Tennessee needs to win him this weekend as these officials will be the primary deciding factor for the player. Mike Ekeler and Rodney Garner visited with him at school earlier this week and discussed the Tennessee program, his aspirations, his major, etc. Tennessee has been heavily involved with Agu since the beginning of this past football season.
Quote on Josh Heupel: "What he has managed to do this season has been pretty amazing. I like where the program is going."
From what I can tell, this staff wants to build this with a particular type of player. They identify physical attributes that they are looking for, but then they want a particular mental and character profile. They want kids that will come in, keep there head down and work everyday. Kids with an extremely blue collar mentality and high football IQ. I like it.
Didn't Trent Dilfer say something very similar about Heupel earlier this year? From what I can tell, this staff wants to build this with a particular type of player. -VQAgu is a big athletic kid who liked Tennessee before he committed to Vanderbilt. Tennesssee wasn’t sure what to make of him back then but after a really good senior year, Rodney Garner has picked up the efforts and he is giving Tennessee a long hard look. Garner was by the school for a visit earlier this week.
-CallahanThe Class of 2022 edge rusher from Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School in Rabun Gap, Ga., arrived at Tennessee on Friday to begin his official visit with the Vols this weekend. He received a visit from Tennessee defensive line coach Rodney Garner and Mike Ekeler, the Vols' outside linebackers and special teams coordinator, on Tuesday and decided to return to Knoxville after also attending Tennessee's home game Sept. 11 against Pittsburgh.
It's one of two official visits the 6-foot-6, 225-pound Agu is planning to take leading up to the Early Signing Period, which begins Dec. 15. He said he's also set to return to Vanderbilt "next week" for an official visit with the Commodores, who landed him in July just three days after he decommitted from Notre Dame.
Class of 2022 defensive lineman Linus Zunk, one of Agu's teammates at Rabun Gap-Nacoochee, also has been committed to Vanderbilt since March.
But Agu said Tennessee, which gave him a scholarship offer in early March, has stayed in contact with him on a regular basis over the past few months. Ekeler and Garner have been spearheading his recruitment for the Vols.
"I’ve been talking to Tennessee since the beginning of my senior season," Agu told GoVols247 before arriving in Knoxville for his official visit.
Agu recorded 72 tackles, including 24 tackles for loss and 14 sacks, during his senior season. He said Tennessee's coaches like that he's "fast" with a "quick burst" off the edge, and with the Vols still searching for pass-rushing help, they're still hoping to add him to their 2022 class.
"They want me to play defensive end, coming off the edge weighing about 250-260 (pounds)," said Agu, who's ranked by 247Sports as the No. 27 edge rusher in the 2022 class and the No. 43 senior from the state of Georgia.
Before beginning his official visit Friday morning, he already was familiar with Tennessee. He said he attended the Vols' 41-34 loss to Pittsburgh on Sept. 11, and he was impressed by Tennessee's game-day environment during his first game at Neyland Stadium. He also believes the Vols are moving in the right direction under first-year head coach Josh Heupel.
"I visited Tennessee when they played Pittsburgh," Agu said. "I love the atmosphere of the crowd in the stadium and what the (head coach) is doing with the program in Year One."
Agu, who was born in Ireland and grew up in England before moving to the United States in high school, has been timed at 4.75 seconds in the 40-yard dash. He also has recorded a 36.5-inch vertical jump.
I do too. Great points. In CHRIST AloneFrom what I can tell, this staff wants to build this with a particular type of player.
