Cordell (Ga.) Crisp County linebacker Christopher Paul Jr. decommitted from Nebraska on Thursday afternoon. He is tabbed by the Top247 as the nation’s No. 28 inside linebacker.

The 6-foot-1, 235-pound Paul has his eye on a few programs moving forward. “Louisville, Tennessee, Cincinnati as of now,” he told 247Sports. “I still like Nebraska too, I just need to re-evaluate some things before this big decision.”

One that isn’t expected anytime soon. “I’m going to take my time this time and hopefully everything opens back up,” Paul said.

In 14 games as a junior Paul racked up 157 tackles with 10 for loss, 4.5 sacks, seven hurries and a forced fumble and two recoveries.

Y’all really gotta chill with this star gazing bullshi*. I mean seriously 🤷‍♂️ There’s a reason these coaches get paid what they do for what they know and how successful they’ve been. Sit back and relax & be ready to light cigars.

While I will admit you cannot get completely caught up in star gazing, there is plenty of evidence pointing to star rankings being extremely significant. Is it a coincidence that the teams in the playoffs every year are the same ones with the top recruiting classes? Is it a coincidence that the teams that finish in the top 5 and win their division have the top recruiting classes?

Who would be considered the best HCs if CF right now? Saban, Dabo, Riley, Smart, Day? Those guys are at the top of recruiting year in and year out. There is absolutely an association between star gazing and success.

Oklahoma and Clemson are almost annual participants and until recently never reached top 5 classes (Clemson in 2020 at #3...Oklahoma has never been higher than #6. Through their runs they’ve averaged more in the 11-16 range). LSU is a top 5 recruiting fixture and just recently made their first playoffs.

Yeah, think we have determined that the players they are recruiting and have committed get ratings bumps so it becomes a chicken/egg argument.

meh. this isn't rocket science.

duh..more 4/5* guys usually means better football teams over time. in other news, water is wet.

but every program takes, and seeks out, it's fair share of 3* guys....because they do their own evaluations and their own boards.

plus, no camps....so no additional eyes on kids this spring/summer....no chance to impress a college staff at one of their camps. or get the attention of a a couple of the recruiting services for ratings bump....

basically..........it' don't matter. lol. here's what i'll agree with: you aren't going to compete with GA, FL or Bama if you sign 25 3*'s every year. well, you might every 4th or 5th year...but i digress.

but we're not doing that. so don't worry about it. lol.

Everyone always throws out the exceptions, but for the most part, schools with great recruiting end up with a top tier football team. I might be wrong, but I think I heard from an analyst after the draft that 80% or more of the first rounders were 4/5* players coming out of high school. Again I could be wrong, but I remember thinking to myself that that was a high percentage. I guess someone will look it up, and I would to.....if I cared enough.

And someone always throws out the odds. We have been over this so many times. Conclusion.....no need to panic if we are recruiting a 3*. He may beat the odds, and our team may also.

Clemson and Oklahoma aren’t EXCEPTIONS. They meet the definition of “teams that are always in the playoffs”. No one’s quibbling over recruiting’s importance but there’s a false narrative that top 5 RATED classes are your key to a yearly playoff ticket. ONE program has met that definition. Not Ohio State...not UGA...not LSU...but BAMA. And they finally missed the playoffs. Resume nap.

I prefer to think climbing stairs is a good analog. You need two good legs to get to the top. Top rated talent ...and development of said talent. It is a difficult climb to the top with only one leg....but you can get there. Lots of other variables in there too...accidents and injuries, attitudes and not enough playing time, transfer of talent in and out as well as 'transfers' in talent developers (s&c and coaches), etc.
You grab as much talent as you can and develop as best you can...and finally we acknowledge that 18-22 year old have an underdeveloped brain ...so there is an element of chance that throws everything off ... JG at the goal line against ALA ...who would have considered that outcome.
Now that we are all on the same page, back to Paul ... 😎

Maybe I’m wrong, but Dabo didn’t start his success by accumulating top 5 classes. Yes, generally you need top 10 classes. But there are players out there that the services rate as 3 stars that eventually become really good players.

Lincoln Riley doesn’t recruit at that level either, and his defenses show for it.

Compared to their conference Clemson and OU recruit well and usually the best. Clemson is really the only school that has debunked the top 5-7 class trend and they have done it with 2 straight generational qbs and a d-line... the problem with the Sec is top 10 is still only top 6 or 7 in your conference.

Doesn't change the fact that 4 and 5 star players are WAY more likely to be better than 3 stars
Yes and there will always be 4&5 stars who do not pan out and 3 stars who surprise. Hopefully at minimum they cancel each other out.
