Okay so I've got a question...what keeps an individual from receiving a small academic scholarship for example the "Atl Vol Future Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship" for some much needed financial assistance for tuition, books, etc?? It would strictly be for academic purposes but if that individual chose to walk on to the football as well then I don't see a problem with that...am I wrong?

can't do that. if you're on scholarship, and you play football, you have to have a football scholarship.

👆👆👆this. If you play football, has to be a football scholarship and not academic or any other sport. NCAA rule. So either football scholarship or walk on with no scholarship.

I think they vett the hell out of any scholarships being issued to highly ranked recruits. Myron Rolle was an academic stud and number one football prospect according to ESPN. 4.0 all through school and won fellowships and was a Rhodes Scholar and currently a neurosurgery resident at Harvard. Took up an athletic scholarship at the U.

The Rolle you are talking about went to FSU. Antrelle Rolle went to the U. They are cousins

If you are on an athletic scholarship and play football, you have to be on a football scholarship. 15.2.6.2 specifically states that student-athletes may receive financial aid (defined as scholarships, grants, tuition waivers, loans) having no relationship to athletics ability.

No sure this is true. I believe if you are a resident of Tennessee and qualify for the lottery scholarship, you can receive that.

I agree. My post is referring to original question.

Yeah...we have Bear Bryant to thank for this rule
I believe the Bear Bryant rule was because Bear was placing someone on scholarship for another sport and then playing them on football. Basically now, if you play 2 sports, the scholarship counts toward major sport.
Ex: Tennis and Basketball equals basketball scholarship.

The original post was about walking on with an academic scholarship. There's nothing preventing that. The rules (15.2.6.2) specifically state student-athletes can receive non-athletic related (i.e academic) financial aid. Now, if the financial aid is related to athletics, it would have to be a football scholarship.

There's a reason why if I asked for an example of this happening, you couldn't provide one. If you could do it, somebody would be doing it. This idea gets brought up every year.

No authority, here, but my recollection is that an athlete can have an academic scholarship only if he or she applied for it before the university expressed interest in the student as an athlete.

I'm just stating what the rules say. My son played football in high school. Some good kids on the team but I would be hard pressed to name one that could qualify on academic merit for a scholarship to a major university.

i get that, but his point was about making room for recruits and over signing.

you can't do that....otherwise, everyone would do it. there'd be no blue shirts or grey shirts etc...just walk on and here's an academic scholly mr. 4*........

and we're gonna be under the 85 again i believe, so if it were possible, i think we'd use that to fill up the 85 as fast as we could.
