A highly ranked linebacker target now will be taking his official visit to Tennessee a bit sooner than he originally planned. Four-star Class of 2023 linebacker
CJ Allen of Lamar County High School in Barnesville, Ga., told GoVols247 on Tuesday afternoon that his scheduled official visit with the Vols the
weekend of June 24 has been moved up to this weekend.
The 6-foot-1, 217-pound Allen said he decided to visit Tennessee a week earlier simply "because this week was empty" on his schedule. The change of plans will give him plenty of time to weigh his options leading up to
July 9, when he said he intends to announce his college decision.
Tennessee hosted Allen for the first time Sept. 18 for its home game against Tennessee Tech. He returned to Knoxville on April 9 to attend the Vols' second spring scrimmage, which effectively served as a replacement for their spring-ending Orange and White Game because of ongoing renovations inside Neyland Stadium.
After his latest trip to Tennessee, he said it was "one of the top schools, for sure." At the time, he said he was high on the Vols for multiple reasons.
“It’s just because sometimes, at one point, it’s more than football,” Allen said in April. “I know they’ve got my back for life. I know, if I decide to go there, I’ll be good. I’ll be taken care of as a man.
“I feel like Tennessee’s going to shock a lot of people this year. They’re definitely on the rise. They’re going to have a good team this fall, and they’re definitely on the rise. And (I like) the opportunity to be able to come in and play.”
In April, Allen said he was hearing from the Vols “almost every other day, or every day,” led by linebackers coach
Brian Jean-Mary, defensive analyst
Chad Creamer and head coach
Josh Heupel.
“They were just telling me I’d have a good opportunity to come in and be a guy that can play early,” Allen said after his latest trip to Tennessee.
“No time is promised, and nothing is given to you. But it’s an opportunity I would have.
“Coach Heupel, he’ll send me a quote almost every day. Coach BJ, he’s being real. He’s honestly kind of a teacher or a life coach. Also, Coach Creamer — I talk to Coach Creamer a lot, too.”
