'20 GA QB Harrison Bailey (UT SIGNEE)

The four-star Class of 2020 quarterback from Marietta (Ga.) High School completed 19 of 30 passes for 367 yards and five touchdowns Thursday night to help the Blue Devils open their season with a 48-14 win over Rome (Ga.) High School in the Corky Kell Classic at Rome's Barron Stadium.

In addition to Bailey's first-quarter touchdown pass to Gilbert, the Elite 11 quarterback threw touchdown passes of 31 yards to Troy running back commitment Kimani Vidal, 16 yards to Michigan State wide receiver commitment Ricky White, 9 yards to Gilbert and 20 yards to White.

Bailey's 20-yard scoring strike to White down the middle on fourth-and-15 pushed Marietta's lead back to 41-14 with 8:07 to play, ending any hopes of a late comeback by the Wolves after they scored back-to-back touchdowns to open the second half.

His slimmer frame and improved mobility showed up at times, too. He completed multiple passes outside the pocket while rolling to his right, and he even tucked and ran for an 8-yard gain on third-and-3 during the game's opening drive — a 10-play, 80-yard scoring drive that ended with a 5-yard touchdown run by Vidal.

Welp that's targeting on the offensive player

Nope. Even though it is stupid, the offensive player has the right to lower his shoulder before contact. If head to head contact is made for some reason it goes against the defense. It’s stupid. I’ve always said that if someone running the ball lowers their head right before contact and helmet to helmet contact is made it shouldn’t be a penalty unless it was for sure targeting to the point where the defender saw the lowering of the head and attack the portion. If the defender is already down at the level and the offensive player lowers themselves to that level it shouldn’t be targeting.

Huh? No. That’s targeting on White. The defensive player was standing straight up and White speared him with the crown of his helmet.

First off he lowered his shoulder (yes and his head) to receive contact. The defender is the one who hit him in the head. Targeting always goes against the defense. Name the last time you’ve seen an offensive player called for targeting.

You know what, I rewatched it and you’re right I didn’t notice the kid lowered his head before White trucked him.

Rule does state any player not just offense right?. I don’t think it’s enforced against offense much. But it should.

My point is, targeting is stupid in the sense that if that was a college game, that would not have been targeting although the offensive player lower his shoulder and head to make contact with other players head.

But if you reverse the roles and that was the defensive player who did that, it would be considered targeting.

My last thing and this isn’t anything against you it is against the targeting rule, if the defender lowers his head to attack and somehow makes contact with the head of the offensive player because said offensive player lowers himself to that level it should never be considered targeting, never.
