“After visiting Tennessee for the first time more than five months ago,
Len'Neth Whiteheadtwice tried to plan another trip to Knoxville over the summer but wasn’t able to make it there.
He finally will get to see the Vols again later this month.
The four-star Class of 2020 linebacker/athlete from Athens (Ga.) Academy said he’s scheduled to travel to Tennessee the weekend of Aug. 31 on his first official visit to attend the Vols’ season opener against Georgia State, and he admitted they’re “up there” among the seven teams he’s considering.
The 6-foot-2, 228-pound Whitehead said his trip to Knoxville later this month will be the first of up to four official visits he’s hoping to take before announcing his college decision, which could come by the end of September.
For now, he’s not ready to name any favorites. He said there are “a few up there that I can kind of tell, but nothing’s set in stone yet.” The Vols are one of the teams recruiting him hardest, though, and he said he’s currently “looking at them big-time.”
“I can say they’re up there,” said Whitehead, who’s ranked by 247Sports as the No. 86 overall prospect and No. 7 inside linebacker in the 2020 class.
“I just like what Coach (Jeremy) Pruitt is trying to do with the program and flipping it around, along with (inside linebackers) coach (Kevin) Sherrer. I went on campus. It was nice. I could tell the fans are crazy, so it’s just a nice atmosphere to play in, so I’m excited to get back up there and just see what it’s like on game day.”
Whitehead said he hasn’t finalized plans for any other official visits to this point, but “I want to say that I’ll be going to Wisconsin and South Carolina.” He said he thinks Texas or Texas A&M also will get one of his official visits.
Tennessee, South Carolina, Texas and Georgia, he said, are the teams recruiting him hardest. Texas A&M, Wisconsin and Georgia Tech also were included in the top seven he announced last month.
Sherrer, his primary recruiter for the Vols, talks with Whitehead “probably every day, for the most part, he said. He said he also stays in contact with Tennessee quarterbacks coach
Chris Weinke, and he hears from head coach
Jeremy Pruitt “every week or so.”
Whitehead said he has developed “a pretty good relationship” with Sherrer since the Vols gave him his first SEC scholarship offer in May 2018.
“He’s a cool guy,” Whitehead said. “I can tell he knows what he’s talking about, so I wouldn’t mind working up under him.”
Tennessee’s coaches have told Whitehead that he could play either linebacker or running back there, and he admitted that’s one of the reasons he’s intrigued by the Vols.
“The biggest pitch is they’re open to me playing either side of the ball, so that’s the big one that’s kind of got me looking at them big-time,” he said. “I love both sides of the ball. I feel like running back has always been my more natural position. But I feel like I’ve been improving at linebacker this year, so it’s kind of hard to cut that off.
“We’ll see how the beginning of the season goes, which side I’m looking better on and I feel more comfortable playing at the next level.”
Tennessee isn’t the only team discussing the idea of playing Whitehead on either side of the ball. He said “Texas is saying the same,” and Wisconsin is recruiting him as a running back.
He said the Vols have told him they need “a big back who can move, so I guess I kind of fit that category.”
Whitehead said he also likes the idea of “having the ability to try to come in early on and get playing time,” and he believes he has a good opportunity to do that at Tennessee. He also has been impressed by the Vols’ fans.

"I’m a big atmosphere guy, and I’ve just heard so many stories about how Tennessee has one of the craziest fan bases,” said Whitehead, whose visit to Knoxville in March allowed him to attend the Vols’ basketball game against Kentucky. “That (game) was even crazy because it was Tennessee versus Kentucky, so it was wild.”
Whitehead said he likes South Carolina — which hosted him in June on one of his most recent visits — for some of the same reasons he’s high on the Vols, starting with his “relationship with the coaches.”
“Their facilities are amazing, and I like what Coach (Will) Muschamp is trying to do — the same as Coach Pruitt — trying to flip around the program and build on something and get big players in there,” Whitehead said. "I feel like I’d be able to fight for early playing time there.”
Nearby Georgia also remains a contender for Whitehead, but he admitted he’s now more open to considering other schools than he once was.

“At the beginning, everyone had me as a shoo-in,” he said. “I considered myself a shoo-in, too. But the farther I go in the process, you start weighing all the options. You start seeing that maybe this isn’t the best fit, or maybe it is. But I can’t just look at them as the only option when I have others, so I’ve been looking around.
“My relationship with Georgia is pretty good. It’s the same. They recruit me the same as, I would hope, any other athlete. Their depth at linebacker, it’s a little deeper than most as far as talent-wise, so that’s one thing to think about with them.”
